That is the most ridiculous foolishness in this movie. See if everyone in the town was in on this cult I would say ok. But it is obvious the cops are not on to it so when the Nanny gets killed in broad daylight and her body in left on the side of the side walk no mention of it is made. No questions asked to the people in the neighborhood about the murder. Oh and then we have the body in the garbage can you would of thought at least the garbage men would of noticed it. Nothing. A cop gets blown up in his car, nothing. There was a cop trying to break the the door of that shed, he gets killed along with a few other people. I am not even sure what happened there, were they killed or did they just dissolved into air? And if the cult members dissolved why did the cop? But when they go pick the husband up they send only one cop to do it. This is a man they think slaughtered his wife and kid. Barney Fife must be running the police department.

You seem to be missing one key point in the movie. The cop that was killed was the same one that arrested the husband at the end. So there was some kind of reset or dream-sequence or something near the end of the movie. Also remember that the train and tools in the shed all fell down when the boy was being possessed but after he stabbed the boy, everything had reset and was back on the shelves.
So, maybe everything that happened in the first 95% of the movie was a dream or hallucination to trick him into killing his family. Or maybe the devil partially turned back time. Or maybe the guy killed his family for unknown reasons and then imagined a scenario to justify it.
Whatever happened at the end, it kind of nullified most of the rest of the movie and made all of the plot holes moot.
