Where are the pro-film voices in this?

I have not seen this yet, but judging by the trailer, i see no prominent pro-celluoid voices. I'm thinking Quentin Tarantino, PT Anderson as being the biggest voices for this. Is the film itself as one-sided and bias as the trailer suggests? The only names on the cover are of the pro-digital crowd.

Nolan and DP Wally Pfister are on it. That's really about it for film. The doc was a little one-sided, but admittedly wasn't really about digital vs. film. It sort of took the position from the beginning that digital had already won anyway, and really just chronicled the story of the debate. Sad, but at least it's upfront about what it is.

Haven't seen it yet but if the trailer is to judge by it would have been nice to see more pro-film debaters like you say.

Why not get Rodriguez and QT in the same room discussing it? That would have been fun!

Maybe that's because most people who intelligently look at the history of film will notice that digital is an unavoidable fate that must be embraced to be raised to the same standard as film.

reply

Well maybe but that would negate the whole point of the film which is to discuss the debate.

That is true, but digital has already won and it is presented as such. Plus there are few filmmakers who are still totally against digital. Even Chris Nolan's cinematographer said that within ten years they will probably be working with digital. When almost everyone is on one side of the argument, you can't have an even debate; it's mathematically impossible.

reply

Yeah, but there's still the people that's been mentioned on here - QT, Spielberg at least used to be.

Del Toro and Cuaron - where do they stand? I think Cuaron likes film.

Both are shooting digital now:

Del Toro used Red Epic cameras to shoot 'Pacific Rim'
Cuaron used the Arri Alexa to shoot 'Gravity'

reply

PT Anderson, Sofia Coppola and Quentin Tarantino would have been nice, I agree.

reply

So would Wes Anderson, but they rarely agree to do things like this. The only one I could imagine having possibly been in the film is Tarantino, but every other director here is never really in any documentaries.

reply

Scorsese was in it, and didn't seem overly pro digital, though I do realize that he obviously shot Hugo digitally and is shooting his new film on digital as well. He didn't seem really for either side though, imo.

I don't think he cares as much about format as he does about content, which subsequently led to him being one of the strongest story directors.

reply

Yes he shot Hugo digitally but transferred it to Super 35mm celluloid.

Digital raw file > digital answer print > Super 35mm internegative > digital answer print (for 3D & theaters with digital projectors) > 35mm answer print (for theaters with 35mm projectors)
