Was John famous? (Spoilers)

And how much?

They kept calling him The Cincinnati Kid or at least talked about Cincinnati all the time, from where we are assured he has never been! I do believe Steve McQueen already owns that name anyway :)

1) So; who was he? A good gunslinger who used to be a ranger and a detective?
- I'm good with that.

But more importantly to me:
2) Why did Rudd and his hooded gang try to kill Sutherland's character?

- John Mason was giving Rudd's gang trouble already and slowly becoming his enemy; why take out the man hunting him?

Rudd said "no unnecessary violence" which he proved by killing the most violent gang member. I'm not sure what that says about him. A hypocrite?
- And how is later killing a US Marshal necessary violence? Surely they will send more to investigate?!?

Maybe Rudd saw Mason as his friend and wanted to help?
- However; I highly doubt he saw the world that way, after killing his father.

Maybe Rudd knew Sutherland was a law man and didn't want him sniffing around?
- But he wasn't sniffing around was he? He was after Mason; nothing else.

1. Don't know but it may have been a case of mistaken identity about the Cincinnati Kid since John kept saying he was never in Cincinatti. That was probably someone with the same name.

2. Rudd killed the marshal's gang and thought the marshall was dead to use them as the real gang who killed John's dad. Do you remember when he threw the hood down to John and said something like "we got 'em", all of 'em. Then John said "You sure you got all of them?" Well that's why John dug 'em up to see if they had the brand on their shoulder and then saw it was the marshall's posse minus the marshall, and figured out who was the real killer of his dad. And...Evidently poked around the killing site and found the Sheriff wounded but alive.

I'm not sure how to rate this movie. Yeah, it was a good shoot-'em-up if you like shoot-'em-ups but the whole thing was somewhat hard to grasp the reality of that town. Rarely do you see anyone else in the town and since they had a sheriff why wasn't he doing something. The sheriff acted like he didn't know too much what was going on in his small town. And the few folks you do see in town are only in the saloon.

Never on the street do you more see than two people. Strange, very strange. Limited budget I guess kept them from doing it right but they could have made this a much better film with better dialog and dropping all the dumb scenes with the girl and her gun popping up all the time.

I love this remake - BUT I have to AGREE w/you Steve McQueen (one of the best actors who have ever lived) will always BE Cincinnati Kid; I love my Christian Slater and he does a fantastic job in this movie, so I'll give the name a pass for this one. Christian Slater is such an underrated actor and should be given more movie roles, he has a voice like Jack Nicholson which is a compliment. Steve McQueen was on of my fave actors of all time, I also love John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Sam Elliot, Kirk Douglas, Robert Duvall(who is just freaking amazing in everything he does, especially Westerns), William Holden, Jon Voight, Tommy Lee Jones, Ricky Schroder(another underrated actor, who did such an amazing job as a young child in "The Champ"; he just blew me away, he's also GREAT in Westerns as well)Sam Shepard, Kris Kristofferson Jeff Bridges, Kiefer Sutherland just to name a few. I grew up watching Western movies w/my dad, who is an avid fan of all the above - of course John Wayne being our favorite - that man knew how to make those Westerns. My father while he was in the Marines fighting the Korean War(he also rc'vd a Purple Heart) - got to meet John Wayne while he filmed Flying Leathernecks and they even used my father's troops for some scenes; (of course if you blinked you missed it bc of how fast the movie rolled), anyway he said that John Wayne stood so tall and put his "heart and soul" in every movie he did. Everyone on the set respected him so much as they should. Sorry off topic a bit: My dad is an avid fan of Steve McQueen as well, and my whole family loved EVERY movie he made: he now has a grandson who is named after him, and at a young age he isn't a bad actor as well, he has a little of his grandfather in him; I hope he goes far in his career, right now he's on the Vampire Diaries, and love his character, he has MAJOR role on that show... Anyway Steve McQueen will NEVER be forgotten - NONE of the great ones will (I named a few above that have passed on but just the same - they are legends). AGAIN SORRY SO LONG AND FOR THE RANT... THANKS.

the way i saw it, he was indeed Cincinatti John Mason (i've not seen the original, but i promise, i will be watching it later)... As evidenced by Ben pointing out that he worked with Dad Mason at the PE, and that Dad Mason's son was Cincinatti John Mason.

Clearly he had become famous as sort of an outlaw, and a hot hand with a pistol...
at first i thought maybe it was an erronious nickname... they happen all the time... People mishear something, or approximate something... I got New York hooked to my name for over a year witha crowd, because I grew up on the east coast, and they associated that with New York (as opposed to Philly, which would have been closer).

But then, at the end, when the marshal was leaving town, it clinched that bad things happened in Cincinatti, and the reason Mason was constantly refuting ever having been to Cincinati was because there were charges of some sort pending there for him.

as for Rudd killing the marshalls men, and attempting to kill the marshall as well... Say what you want, John was his friend. he thought he could pin Dad mason's murder on this scoundrel that Mason was already pre-disposed towards wanting to condemn... Basically, someone had to pay for the murder, why not the guy who was chasing you...
it was a mixed up idea of doing him a favor, getting rid of what he thought was just a bounty hunter, and finding someone to take the heat for the murder... sort fo all wrapped up in a pretty present for him...
of course, they botched it, didn't get the marshall, who turned outt o be a marshall, and of course john mason turned out to be smarter, and more honest than rudd gave him credit for... which makes sense, most criminals assume everyone is a criminal, except those who want to be, but are afraid of getting caught...

Very interesting it makes more sense. I like your Package deal concept.

Thank you for clearing it up.
