Advice and no actual help

One thing I've noticed is that Amy inevitably offers up advice, but often this involves contacting practitioners of relatively obscure faiths/practices.

We see on the credits many times: Such and such is still looking for a *insert whatever type of person here* willing to help them....The activity continues.

You'd think that after all that effort to identify the problem she'd at least help them find a legit medium or shaman or whatever, instead of listing off some very specific or obscure type of person that almost everyone would have great difficulty finding.

Like, they're meant to be there to help. Seems that the help ends once filming wraps.

It makes this show seem less like help and more like exploitation.

reply

I've thought that too...most of the people she tells the residents to contact would be next to impossible to find in the small communities that these people are often in. If they aren't at least pointing their "clients" in the right direction then the show is pure exploitation whether Amy is legit or not.

reply

Agreed.

I have heard the doubts about the veracity of Amy's abilities and the legitimacy of this show, but I've given her and the show the benefit of the doubt.

Even so, she seems to have an extensive knowledge of both the occult, and fringe religious and ritual practices...so you'd think she'd have contacts that she could hook up with the people in crisis, or at least know people who might know people that could help.

I find it so disappointing to see those words at the end saying that the people are still seeking some type of specific help...that the activity continues...almost as if it is the various person's or family's fault for not sorting out the problem.

No matter how legitimate she may be, it's my own opinion that if you take on someone's case, you have a duty to follow through with helping them to the best of your ability.

I really don't see that happening...and again, it's extremely disappointing.

I hope someone from that show is monitoring these message boards and reconsider the way they deal with cases...especially when obscure specialists are recommended to remedy paranormal problems.

It's just the decent thing to do.

Not sure what you mean about spending "a fortune on airfare." Most of the people she refers her clients to are priests, reiki masters, tribal shamans, or other mediums. All of these people can be found anywhere. The bigger challenge would be finding a medium or priest that would want to help. The Catholic church has very strict rules about when an exorcism can be performed, for example.

And I would still suspect the biggest hurdle is not finding the person that can cleanse the house, but rather the willingness of the occupants of the house to actually go through with it. In many episodes, the clients appear resistant to Amy's advice.

reply

Agreed and in the "update" at the end it often says that. I'd be pissed!

reply

Idk if it's just the most recent seasons but I noticed a number of episode ending with no real progress. I just saw a season 2 episode that revealed in the end that the activity stopped. Of course it was a fairly simple solution of pouring salt and then throwing it out of the house.

I get what you're saying, and you make a point. But I remember at least ONCE, maybe twice, where she said if you have trouble finding someone, let me know & I'll help you find one. Even if she didn't offer any follow up, wouldn't you hound her for help if you couldn't find someone in your area??

I think the problem is how many people do you know who does anything paranormal, even just as a hobby? I don't know any. And it's not as if you can go to the mall to find this kind of help. It's a small market, thank God, so the help is slim. But, the internet is a great place to start. In my area, some psychics actually advertise in the Yellow Pages, so you call them, and if they can't help maybe they know someone, etc. It's like any other problem, except there are less options. If I had a demon/Devil/dog-man raping my kid, I'D GET THE FUNCK OUT OF THERE SO FRIGGEN FAST... but, if I just couldn't afford to, I'd ask every person I know, as well as strangers, and ask every person I know to ask around... Remember "6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon"...?!

The only part that really pizzes me off, aside from the lack of options, is when these people can't find priests from the bigger religions who won't help them or try to find someone of their faith to help. Spirituality, especially Good versus Evil, is their forte. They profess to believe in these things, yet, when things get ugly, they're as helpful as teets on a bull, y'all. No excuse for that.

That is actually a joke at my house. Trying to guess what outlandish people she says will get rid of the spirits. Or we make up our own for a good laugh "Your going to need an alien shaman, a voodoo priestess who is a mime and a medium who specializes in fish suicides..."

reply

She is a MEDIUM; she's not an exorcist

reply

Exactly. She doesn't have the ability to get rid of entities, demons or shadow people.

reply

BUT she could hook them up with someone who does. The show & Amy surely have connections & resources, at least more so than the helpless guests of the show.
Darkness is a harsh term don't you think?
And yet it dominates the things I see.

reply

She also seems to lack the ability to get rid of even regular "ghosts" / spirits. Another stance she seems to take on is that every one of these ghosts or spirits are EVIL. I assume it's very rare for people in the US to be visited by their passed loved ones, eh?

reply

That is not true. There are numerous cases where she says that one of them has stayed behind to help family members against the evil ones. In the reveal, she'll recommend how to get rid of the evil spirit first before helping the family member move one.

reply

I have watched near every season of this series and the cases where loved ones has stayed on to aid against "evil" are extremely few in comparison.

Also, the times she mentions that seople should help spirits "move on" are very few. Mostly the wording is to "get rid" of something.

reply

Also consider the possibility that people who have "friendly ghosts" wouldn't be calling them for help. You don't call someone for help because something good has happened; you call someone for help when something bad is happening.

reply

Only Jesus can help. The reason nothing works for these families is the bad advice given to them by a medium who is probably demon possessed herself. Demons are what is causing the families problems. Jesus is the only one that can remove demons. The victims of demons need to pray to Jesus, get baptised, and get annointed in oil, and have a house blessing by a pastor. They need to pray, read the Bible, and resist the devil. This is the only way.

We're on a mission from God.

I think you have some good points.

Considering that this show is produced by the Travel Channel, they ought be able to get someone to fly out from wherever.
