Jerry Seinfeld? Really?

Jerry Seinfeld is the definition of a one-hit-wonder and doesn´t deserve to be compared to Loius CK, Chris Rock etc

reply

Yeah because Louis CK and Rock have both had the biggest and most suscessful TV shows on earth for nearly a decade.

Still counts as ONE HIT SHOW. If he had any real talent he would have made another hit like Rock and Louis CK, Don Rickles.

What exactly are these multitude of hits from the other comics that you're referring to? Everybody Hates Chris? Louie? Are you seriously placing these in the same popularity category as Seinfeld?

Like it or not, Seinfeld will go down in history in the "legends" category. Just like music and movies, comedy has multiple genres. From Seinfeld, to Carlin, to Jackie Gleason, to The Three Stooges. Now whether we like all these guys is subjective, but what can't be argued is the fact that all of these comics have made an impact on this world. Not to mention other hit shows that were influenced by the Seinfeld show (Friends, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Arrested Development, etc.) Seinfeld has also influenced pop culture in this country with phrases that we still use today (Yadda Yadda, Low Talker, Man Hands, Re-gifter, Not That There's Anything Wrong With That, No Soup For You, etc.) Seinfeld most definitely deserves to be on the list.

I actually liked Seinfeld a lot, but that´s not the issue, the issue is that Don Rickles, Louis CK, Rock etc has made countless successful stand-up shows over at least 10-15 years. Their body of work stretches over a long time period and they have managed to create something new and original year after year. If you want to know to which shows I am referring they are readily available here on this site and I´m not going to list them, I am however going to list Jerry Seinfeld´s hit: "Seinfeld" and......that´s it.

Dude.... what the hell are you babbling about? Jerry Seinfeld, to date, sells out every venue he performs in. Not tiny comedy clubs either; huge theaters. The man is legendary. To have the most successful sitcom of all time and still be completely relevant over a decade after it ended is a gigantic achievement. You say "Seinfeld and.... that's it" as if that isn't already a monumental achievement in itself. He is without a doubt one of the greatest Stand-Up comics to have ever lived. If you think filmed specials is the only way to grade a comic's success then in essence you're saying comedian Doug Stanhope is a better comic than Jerry Seinfeld because his body of work has been filmed over the last 10-15 years.

Stand-up comedy is best enjoyed as a live experience and as Seinfeld is a comic in the purest form, he keeps his comedy exclusively to the venue he's performing in. I can already tell you're a completely irrational person and this post will go unabsorbed, but Christ do I hope there aren't more people who share your ridiculous opinion.

"One hit wonder." Psh. Nine years is the longest f@ckin' "one hit" in existence.

Clearly, the OP is an idiot. According to him, Bo Jackson is more famous than Michael Jordan because Bo played both baseball AND football.

You seem to be forgetting that Seinfeld has had a long and extremely successful stand-up career, quite apart from Seinfeld. He's also an excellent writer and producer, and has even done some directing. Hardly a one-hit wonder.

Thank you. You gave a laugh. At your expense. But a laugh.

It's not just ONE hit show, the THE hit show, it revolutionised observational stand-up for the masses, either way you swing it, the man's pretty huge.

He's one of the most talented and successful people in comedy. And if he's had only one show, that's the way he wants it. During the interview on Inside Comedy, Seinfeld points out that he much prefers standup gigs to TV series. He said that he started Seinfeld mostly as a curiosity--perhaps with a small cult following--and a way to maybe bump up the attendance at his tour dates. He didn't expect it to last so long and be so successful.

And when it ended, he decided he really preferred doing stand-up tours, even though the TV show made him a billionaire. So he continues his very successful stand-up career. I'm sure he could do another TV series, and it would probably be successful. But it's just not something he prefers to do.
