Great child actors.

I tend to scrutinize the talent of children in films especially when they have a lot of screen time, and both Alice and Simon were terrific. Alice has such screen appeal and I think many casting agents will hopefully recognize her talent and hope she can speak english. A smart and touching movie without a single false note. Congrats.

Here is a clip of Sophie NĂ©lisse who played Alice in the press room after winning her Genie Award for the role speaking english.

Thank you for posting this clip; she is absolutely adorable.

The girl who played Alice was particularly good. She reminded me of a young Drew Barrymore. Simon was utterly fantastic in his "breakdown" scene at the end of the film!

reply

yes, I totally agree; Simon's scene was riveting.

reply

Not just his scene but his whole character. I cared a lot about him. The actor did a great job.

That scene was so remarkable. I wondered what was said by the director or *whomever* to get this boy to grieve so convincingly on camera. It was so raw and intense. The silent shots of the other students viewing his outburst were very powerful as well.

I would have cried while on set watching this little actor doing such a convincing job.

I was also amazed seeing real tears coming out so naturally! He seemed genuinely upset. Alice reminded me so much of Drew Barrymore in E.T.. She was phenomenal as well.

Oh yeah, Simon's tears were so real! And Alice, her inhibition, her "you're gulty" looks etc, wow!!

I agree that all the kids in the movie are excellent, with the two lead ones giving absolutely amazing performances. Great job of casting and directing them. I did have some disbelief at how well behaved and quiet and attentive they were virtually throughout; I've never seen a class that well behaved all the time. That, of course, is a matter of writing and direction, not to do with the actors' performances.

Multiplex: 100+ shows a day, NONE worth watching. John Sayles' latest: NO distribution. SAD.

I couldn't agree more. As a teacher myself, the atmosphere of the class, their cheekiness, their initial hesitance at accepting the stranger in their midst, their resiliency, and their growing devotion to their teacher all rings so very true. I am in awe of this film, and especially, in awe of its little actors.

Stunning performances by all of the child actors. However, Abdelmalik, I want to adopt you!

reply

They were great and I loved the child who played the 'retard', Victor. His background story was sad.

Yes, the entire cast was excellent. Weak child actors can spoil a story with several young characters, but Monsieur Lazhar was very well cast. An exceptional film.

they were amazing!!!

They were fantastic.
