Kind of bland

It started out good, but I feel it dragged on a bit after 20 minutes. It was sort of uneventful to be honest and not the epic it's advertised as. It was okay for a one time watch but I expected better. 6/10

same here. It was good at first then.. nothing too much ever happened, so I got a bit disappointed here, though I would rate it 7/10 just for the originality of sorts and being Leto fan.

reply

Well at least Leto was good in it.

I felt that the ambient music kind of held it together creating the illusion that something was about to happen but I agree, lackluster. Apparently it was supposed to be directed by Takashi Miike and starring Tom Hardy. It might have been better that way.

I did not know that, I bet Miike directing would have made it better. This is one of those frustrating movies that isn't bad but just needed a little something more to make it good.

I have to agree with you guys, although I did like the sumo fight, the tattoo scene, the guys staring in silence...

Yes, something was missing... It seemed like we knew where the plot was going, but there wasn't enough else in terms of mood or ideas to explore while the story unfolds...

It reminded me of Black Rain (1989), the Ridley Scott movie starring Michael Douglas... Now that movie had major atmosphere... Loads of attitude and some over the top silliness, but somehow it feel more emotionally resonant than this...

I liked Leto in this and think his performance in BladeRunner 2049 as Niander Wallace is underrated... I hope he gets more leading role shots...

The Outsider was worth a single watch, especially for gangster movie fans, but not anything special... You just can't escape the feeling that it could have been so much more...

Yeah. I was expecting more and was a bit disappointed. I was hoping it wouldn't follow the standard "Dances With Wolves/The Last Samurai formula. I've been a fan of Tadanobu Asano's who I first noticed in the 00s with "Ichi The Killer" & "Last Life in the Universe" and was excited was in the film. While not a big Jared Leto fan he is reputable so I expected and pretty intense crime drama. Unfortunately it kind of drags & while not necessarily bad performances Asano & Leto both kind of coast through the film like their hearts weren't truly into it but I wouldn't quite say they phoned it in. I think Miike directing would have made for a more colorful project. 6/10
