I still don't get why Jack's semen was found on the scene

Thoughts?

Im still confused on that as well. The scene in the backyard with the dad and the girl and Addie confused me so much I watched it twice. Lol. I got the dad was the one who raped Addie but then I got lost and Addie talked about who put the semen there and I was still on James Van Der Beek's dna still on the girl and I just got so confused. But eventually I gathered what happened and it was the worst written ending I've seen in a while. How in the world did Jake's semen even show up? How in the world did it get there? And how, ever, did the detective not see that Jillian's dna and the semen was a match? That has to be someone she's related to. And what happened in the woods after jake showed up? So many questions.

Thanks for responding! Agreed. Really confusing. So are you saying that the dad raped Jillian in the woods? And good question, what happened to Jack in the woods. Maybe the producers ran out budget and did not have time to create a sensible ending.

reply

Well, I didn't watch the ending because I got annoyed with the movie, so I apologize if this was stated in the movie. But in the book, the semen was not clearly identified as a match to Jack, and was said to likely be a match to someone related to Jillian. So it was just hey, here's a bunch of evidence against you, plus something else that MAY have been something else to prove your guilt. Though throughout the book, it was indicated subtly that there had been long term sexual abuse, so it could have happened earlier.

How could the dad have been in the woods with the girls that night? While they were doing their Wicca ritual, the dad was leading a meeting and trying to drive Jack out of town.

Jack's blood was on Gillian's shirt because she used it to dab at the scrape on his forehead and his skin was found under her fingernails because she was grabbing at his arm to keep him there. The semen on her thigh was inconclusive. They don't go into a lot of detail, but it is mentioned on a few different occasions that the odds of it being someone besides Jack are 740 million to one.

reply

Yes that's where I'm confused. They mentioned that it's 750,000 to once chance that that's not jacks's but it just so happens to be the dad? And not one detective noticed that Gillian's dna and whoever the semen belonged to had the same dna? It took the girlfriend to figure that out? It just didn't make sense to me.

I haven't seen the ending of the movie yet because it's on, but like judithsr said throughout the entire book it's implied Amos was raping his daughter Gillian. I don't know if it's shown in the movie, but in the book Gillian has a sudden rage of hate and urge to kill her dad. She "wondered what it would be like shoot [her dad] in the head." We find out later it's because he's been abusing her.

The semen on Gillian's thigh is her dad's from him previously raping her. He obviously had a history of rape since Addie revealed to Jack in the book that she was gang-raped at sixteen by Charlie, Amos, and a third guy and ended up getting pregnant with Chloe. I don't understand why the movie didn't have Addie say she was ganged raped by the three instead of just one person... though maybe once I get to the ending I will understand :)

Anyway for the main post of this question... in the book a DNA analyst does a test on the semen and mentions to another character there aren't four district numbers at some location on the DNA. She is surprised because with two unrelated people there should be. She suggests maybe Jack is a relative of Gillian's or a relative of Gillian's raped her. Apparently Jordon didn't catch on...

As for the other point mentioned, I found this on a forum "The book states that in the six locations tested in the semen sample, Jack was 740,000 times more likely than someone randomly selected from the population to have contributed to the sample. Well, Amos isn't representative of someone that would be randomly drawn from the population. He's a relative of Gillian's, so that statistic no longer applies."

haha no problem at all! I still haven't watched the whole movie yet, but I definitely suggest reading the book! It's a great read! Hope the movie doesn't ruin it for some who still want to read it :/

Thank you musicaddict! Lol old post but still very useful.. Just watched this on netflix and couldn't figure out what the hell they were talking about with the semen sample. They don't articulate this well enough in the film IMO. Not a bad movie overall though, and certainly one of the better lifetime movies I've watched.

THANK YOU!!!! I rewound it like five times.

I've read all the comments in this thread and I still don't get it about the semen. The lawyer guy asked: "Why was your semen found...?" He specifically said "your". So how could that be possible?

Maybe the father payed someone to plant the evidence on Jack ???????
