Cleaning restaurants? Paying rent and surviving? I make minimum wage also (I choose to as I love my job) and there is no way I have extra money to send to help get my child better. I have to work a 2nd job just to pay my rent etc.
I know people do it though. I have friends and relatives who do. I just don't get how.

Exactly! And especially in NYC, where rent is astronomical -- even her tiny little place is probably $500/month.
But even if her rent were, say, $200 [which would only be possible if she had like 5 roommates, but whatever], she's still only clearing what, like $80 a shift? And considering how crappy her work environment is [if her boss really was that much of a psycho], she's probably being paid less under the table!

I just started the movie and when the cop the said she had moved to NYC to work to save money for her son's operation, I was thinking "you've got to be kidding me!", especially working as a cleaning lady for a restaurant! I assumed at first she moved from another city/state which made it seem even more ridiculous. Hope this gets better....
