Vitiligo

I find it very hard to believe that nowhere in America or the world is some kind of makeup Michaela could apply to mask her vitiligo.

reply

Of course there is a makeup but you have to spend hours everyday doing it, I wouldn't personally do it myself.

And you know this how?

Why should she wear makeup to mask her vitiligo? Because our society is shallow and thinks everyone/thing should be perfect and flawless? I think it's great that she doesn't feel the need to mask anything. And it's not her vitiligo people are looking at when she dances, anyway. Or, at least, it shouldn't be.

^So why bother with any of the cosmetics of ballet dancing if people are only looking at how the performers dance? Are you saying that a ballerina may as well go on stage with unwashed hair and a face free of makeup?

reply

No. I'm saying there's nothing wrong with her vitiligo. It's a perfectly natural part of her and she shouldn't be made to feel she should cover it up. But now that you mention it, yeah. If a dancer showed up on stage with unwashed hair and no makeup, I'd still love seeing her/him dance.

^Changing the subject, I love your avatar. Natch.

reply

Heh. I was thinking the same thing about yours. Natch. :) I am an Elizabeth, and also a Queen...of My Immediate Surroundings, anyway. So it seemed fitting. However--and unfortunately--I'm not British. But I visited the UK twice when I was in college and have made it my life's work to return someday. In the meantime, I watch lots of stuff on BBC America and Acorn. :)

^Jolly good. Carry on.

There was a conversation recalled in the film in which Michaela says she asked her mom if her spots showed onstage, and her mom said no. In the footage of Michaela dancing, the spots don't show that I could see. All you saw was a beautiful, athletic, committed young dancer with an awesome extension and terrific poise.

I think she has beautiful skin and if I were her, I wouldn't cover it. When lights hit her skin, it looks like gold flecks have been sprinkled on her. Absolutely lovely.
