I actually thought that it was neither ugly nor sad.
I think that "L'ultimo terrestre" is a nice, absurd movie with really funny parts (including the absurd start of the movie where people phone to the radio to complain about the effects that the coming aliens may have on the Italian Serie A soccer league....) I guess that you must like a particular sort of absurd movies to enjoy it....
