What is with all the white dresses???

We are almost done with season 2 on Netflix. It is such a soap opera and loving it. But I have never seen so many white dresses. I have looked tried to look up fashion at the time and gotten nowhere. Did the show have a huge shipment of white fabric and lace to make costumes and they forgot other colors?

There's a lovely documentary about the making of Gran Hotel where they talk about the costumes and the color choices. You might check it out. http://www.yongonzalezinternational.com/grand-hotel.htm and look for the title Grand Hotel Special: A Behind the Scenes Look - English Subtitles. It's also on YouTube without the subtitles if you don't need them.

I guess it was a bit easier to support the heat, despite the long sleeves and high colars, if your dress was white. Look at the difference today between winter and summer clothing. ???

I don't think it was really about the weather so much as they wanted to have different styles of dress for each of the characters. At least that's how I remember it from the special. And that was pretty noticeable to me even before I saw heard the explanation.

I was wondering about the white dresses too...
the only thing I could think of is it's an upper class thing. If you can wear white dresses every day you are leading a life of leisure, whereas if you have work to do you can't be wearing white everywhere.
