Soap opera version of Downton Abbey

Gran Hotel looks good, but I quickly found it to be cheesy and tedious. Disappointing and not very believable plot. Even though Downton had less action, I found it a lot more thrilling.

I dunno. I watched both and was much more anxious to see the next episode of Gran Hotel than Downton Abbey. It was more of a mystery and kept us guessing, I thought.

Neither one of them thrilled me more than Poldark, however. 😜

I must say I actually prefer Gran Hotel over Downton Abbey, even though it didn't always make sense (especially the third season) and was cheesy at times, I found it to be way more entertaining.

For people who don't mind the soap-opera touch and just want some mindless drama and romance this show is perfect.

I agree. And I never watched Downton Abbey 14 times, although I was watching Gran Hotel for the Spanish immersion more than anything else after a while. Still, I still enjoyed it. I love the clothes and felt like I knew all the characters.

If you haven't seen Poldark, you're missing something really great! Just sayin'...

Actually I find Downton Abbey waaaay more chesse than Gran Hotel because in Gran Hotel at least the main plot is the crime investigation....while DA has in fact all the "cliches" of a soap opera (from the sister who is in love with the main character but doesn,t want to admit it, the other one with the chofer, to the other ine losing her daugther...)
However that being said I still prefer DA just because it is like a soap opera.... I love it :D and maybe because I saw it first, but I just finished season 1 of GH so I might change my mind...

Well, as I said, if you like either Downton Abbey or Gran Hotel, you'll love Poldark!

I loved Downton Abbey and think it is just somewhat more mature than Gran Hotel from an objective point of view. Gran hotel is a bit more like a soap opera with a lot of unrealistic details that are discussed in other topics on this board.

Having said that I love Gran Hotel more than Downton Abbey. I guess the main reason is Yon González and his role as Julio, and the chemistry between Julio and Alicia. Such chemistry was totally missing in DA. I never joined the message board of DA and here I am in the message board of GH. So yes, if I had to chose I would pick GH over DA.

Poldark.. never heard of it, thanks for the recommendation!

I stumbled across Gran Hotel on Netflix and only started watching because I thought it might help me with my Spanish, I was actually surprised that it turned out to be that good!

I think a lot of us were surprised about Gran Hotel. Who knew Spain would produce something like that?

You'll love Poldark. It's just an amazingly well-done production. And its star is just gorgeous!
