Copper v Deadwood

Which is better?

I am almost done with s1, and I am super impressed. I would put this up against any HBO or Showtime shows over the last 10 years or so. Sopranos and Dexter are probably a cut above, but they are also incredibly different.

Both shows are excellent in their own ways. I never think it's 'fair' to compare shows. They should stand alone on their own merits, or demerits, IMO.

reply

I loved Deadwood and I'm a big fan of Copper so to me - they both win!

reply

I do enjoy Copper very much, but Deadwood is still superior. One of my all time faves.

reply

We used to call deadwood "c@cksucker" since you heard that word every 2 minutes!! I miss that show...why did it end after only what -3 seasons?

It had something to do with a union strike (writers? I don't remember). They were "supposed" to do a 2 hours movie special to wrap things up, but that never happened. One of the biggest shames to happen to that brilliant show.

reply

I'd say the scales tip in favor of Deadwood, although in this case there is no loser as they are both really good shows.

Deadwood. Copper is better than nothing, but I sometimes feel the dialogue is too modern. The Copper sets and clothing are out of this world however! I also give Copper high marks for (fairly) historical accuracy. But, Deadwood is a masterpiece to me.

If you can get past the unrelenting profanity that rides on the top, you will find almost poetic Victorian language riding underneath.

Though I enjoy Copper, Deadwood is in the small class that can fairly claim: Best There Ever Was.

reply

I like Deadwood better but hopefully Copper will end when it's had it's FULL run and not be incomplete.

reply

I liked Deadwood, but the foul language made it actually difficult to understand dialogue.

Deadwood by a great margin. Copper even retreads some its storylines. IMO Hell on Wheels is better than Copper as far as violent 19th century period pieces go.

reply

I was just about to say that while I do like Copper very much I enjoy Hell on Wheels more. Deadwood trumped them both.

reply

That's the order of my preference as well. I think I'd slip Ripper Street after Hell on Wheels and before Copper.

reply

I gave up on Hell on Wheels about 2/3 of the way through S1. They made the Colm Meanie character too cookie-cutter, IMHO, and I couldn't get over that.

It seemed that every ep had to knock me over the head with "Rail-Barons are evil. This character is a bad guy. Rail-Barons are evil. This character is a bad guy."

I will grant that I may have concentrated on that aspect too much, and the show has lasted a long time with GREAT reviews, so I may give it another chance one of these years.

Since I started this thread, I finished S1 of Copper and watched the first couple eps of S2. WOW! The first 2 eps are extremely slow and boring. I have dropped the show on my priority list since these eps and have not watched any in the last 2 or 3 weeks.

reply

I like Copper, but it can't touch Deadwood.

reply

Deadwood. It's far superior. I actually liked Copper's firsts few episodes, but it started to go downhill.

reply

Speaking on behalf of Al Swearengen, compared to "Deadwood", "Copper" is a *beep* I like "Copper" but it's not in the same league as "Deadwood".
