I liked Halo better when it was just Military Science Fiction.

i like the mythology of the halo game, but i preferred it when it was in the background. the first game was A military sci-fi story that had a dark tonal shift towards the third act. it was initially just hard military sci-fi with creepy dogmatic aliens and "SPACE ZOMBIES". then they decided to go full on space opera. with long drawn out speeches from the bad guys, the flood now have a "gravemind" and other uber sci-fi stuff. what do you guys think?

That's the issue i had with the new battlestar galactica.

As long as we don't have to play as the covenant again, I'll be okay with whatever weird directions they go in. This game in particular had some pretty good military set pieces.

i agree with the OP that Halo has become more and more less military science fiction. that's what drew me too it. now it's boarder line star wars/trek. yeah i like those franchises btw.

I think that they are taking Halo in an excellent direction. It is still military sci fi, just with more sci fi. The lore is really good and I would like to see more of it in the games.

I liked each of the first three games more in their first halves. Then on reaching the inevitable Flood levels, I would just think "I know, not this crap again." In my opinion, the best levels have always involved striking against the Covenant with a band of troops on an organized mission, especially if a warthog is involved.
