I preferred the live action (reasons and spoilers)

First off I'm not trying to troll, I'm just stating my opinion.

This movie was very nice visually but Harada's statement that the movie wouldn't just be for Tekken fans comes up false. You have to have a fair knowledge of games 3-6 for some of the stuff the characters mention off-hand, and even then sometimes the knowledge of the series is contradicted by certain characters being jammed in for cameo sake (Ganryu and more so Lee).

If you walk into this movie as a causal viewer you'd get treated to the following: Two decoy protagonists, two supporting characters fighting each other over a mcguffin character for their sides, and said mcguffin's ultimate fate rendering the four aforementioned characters involvement absolutely pointless.

Let's also take into account that ANYBODY going into a movie based on a fighting game expects to see a good deal of fighting, the movie has THREE fight scenes. There would'be been four but they decide to show the build up to, what would chronologically turn out to be a moot plot point with no real resolution, and the insane looking aftermath. Most of the film seems like filler until the ultimate showdown at the end, in which NONE of the characters you've been following up until this point really matter. What you've watched up til now turns out to be the dominoes falling in Heihachi's contrived roundabout way of getting Jin and Kazuya to fight with him. (Side note: As a Tekken fan, you can figure that this contradicts the nature of this multi-generational grudge as all he'd really have to do is make a challenge, cause all three characters will fight each other at a pin drop.)

Also being a Tekken movie, it's amazing how they don't mention the tournament until a post credits scene involving our two "protagonists". As for this being more true to the franchise, I only see it being so in that the graphics match those of the game. Fewer characters appear here than in the live action, and some are shoehorned in for the sake of mentioning them by name (you call that thing at the end Mokujin if you want). This movie serves little point in introducing anything truly new to the franchise either, as it's purported to take place between 5 & 6. The characters involved don't really grow in anyway, as a fan of the series this movie doesn't really add anything to the overall narrative of the game story line. We get a bunch of filler scenes that all adds up to a Jin/Kazuya/Heihachi triple threat match, which starts out as a high octane fight (ok that's Tekken) but eventually becomes a supernatural dogfight with Devil-forms flying, punching, and shooting lasers at whilst avoiding and attacking a giant supernatural beast made of the wood of the temple they wrecked , all filmed at dizzying pace. (Still sound like Tekken?)

People complained that the live action misused/lacked characters, well considering it did end with a small sequel hook, it left room for other characters to appear. This movie, which again takes place between 5&6, leaves out characters who underwent major development in lieu of all that happened between the two games. Your cast is Xiaoyu, Alisa, Nina, Anna,Panda,Shin(orginal/pointless McGuffin),Ganryu and Lee (both in out of character roles) for the MAJORITY of the movie. Then with about 20 or so minuets to go the focus goes completely to the Jin/Kazuya/Heihachi aspect, leaving every other plot line involving every other character unresolved and absolutely pointless.

I could go on, but looking at this as a Tekken fan and a Movie fan peirod, this was not as good as the live action movie, it's still better than the early anime, but that's not saying much. They'd have done better to just include the triple threat as it's own special disc with the TTT2 or something, but this was pointless in the overall scheme of what was supposed to be it's own story. This being a "true" Tekken movie, what did it effect within the Tekken universe, what did it really effect within it's own self contained narrative? The live action could have been better made, but this just would've been better not being made in my opinion.

I enjoy both films, but not quite sure which I like more. I think I might like Jin in the live-action version more, as he comes off more like an obvious good guy, rather than anti-hero.

I've never played the games, so I'm really unfamiliar with most if not all of these characters.

yes overall this was pointless because they were afraid to mess with the canon(they mention this in the special features interview between harada and dai sato) or something so they did this ultimately lackluster but eyecandy show.

in a way the final act matches sort of mirror the way tekken handles the game final boss battles, as they usually revolve around the mishimas, then dealing with a sub-boss (devil vs devil jin) then the final boss battle with majin heihachi.
