People just don't get it apparently.

And that's fine. It wasn't made for you anyways. I thought it was a f'n hoot. Can't wait for the DVD.

I loved machete, but this one was just crap. It lacked everything that made the first one so much fun.

reply

^ thank you gargamel. I 'get it' and was so excited for MK.... unfortch it was one of the worst movies I've ever seen, showcasing NONE of its fine actors except maybe amber. ugg.

reply

Exactly! I "get it" as well, but there is a big difference between making a fun film that doesn't take itself seriously versus a film that just seems strung together. Machete was Grindhouse goodness that captured the feel of an exploitation film, and it was fun and silly. Machete Kills feels like a parody of a parody, it just felt sloppy as opposed to charming.

Mexico- God's blind spot.

reply

I agree. The first one was a good spoof/homage of exploitation movies. This one seemed to be parodying the parody, which rarely works.

The "Machete don't xxxxx" joke was funny the first time but it got old fast. The sci-fi/spy elements were cheesy, as if Robert wanted to make a James Bond parody but decided to use his ideas in Machete. It felt like those Scary Movie sequels where they start parodying a bunch of non-horror movies for the sake of cheap laughs.

reply

I agree with you. yeah, it just doesn't have the punch, verve, balls, spirit, or charm of the first film. it's not powerful at all like the first film. the tone is the biggest problem as it has a light, comedic tone as opposed to the hardcore, serious, bare fisted, exploitative, explicit, dirty tone of the first machete. and, that's what made the first machete so good, it's take no prisoners, anything goes, unapologetic, kinetic feel. that vibe is not anywhere in this movie and that's why this movie sucks in comparison. also machete has a we'll show anything vibe in it which is awesome. I'm talking about the hardcore action, violence, and nudity. gosh I even saw pussy, dude, pussy, now that's daring! I'm talking about the scorchingly hot Hispanic woman who is nude and who is picked up carried by machete. this movie has NO female nudity, NO female nudity, what the f. Has Robert Rodriguez lost it. has he lost his sense and understanding of how to make a good movie? showing hardcore nudity, and hardcore violence and action is what gives an action movie balls, this movie doesn't have balls, which the first machete has in spades. and, while the first machete is silly in parts, the silliness felt okay, and appropriate and fitting for the movie, it didn't feel dumb, whereas the silliness in this movie feels mostly dumb. some of the silly stuff works, but not enough of it. and, the key thing about the first film is it wasn't that silly, only a small part of it was silly. so it mostly has a serious, hardcore '80s action film feel. whereas this movie is totally silly, it just doesn't work anywhere near as well as the first machete. if the funny lines and parts worked then this movie would've been better, but as they are this movie just isn't that good. what do you think of all this?

reply

I totally understand your problems with this movie. please read the post I just put in here on May 1, 2014 to get the reasons why I thought this movie is not anywhere near as good as the first machete, okay? thanks.

reply

I felt the same way.

In the original it was an over the top b-movie with so many various undertones and awesome action sequences.

Machete Kills (which had a great title) just went for the ridiculous (not as tongue and cheek amazing ridiculous as Planet Terror), but bad ridiculous like perhaps Bitch Slap.... which for Rodriguez to not pull off makes me sad and angry.

reply

Exactly. Machete is like a really bad movie made by a really talented and funny team. Kills is just a bad movie made by a *beep* team. Two completely different movies. This one was stupid as hell.

reply

Agreed. When attempting a project like this, there is a very fine line between making a worthwhile parody of the crappy movies you are paying homage too, and simply adding another crappy movie to the genre. This one fell on the wrong side of that line.

there are so many deserving of retribution...and there is so little time

reply

Right on!

*beep* week I bought the DVD..Everyday..I was waiting to watch it.
Savored the moment..
And finally: BAM! wathced it.
Couldn't be happier with this movie.
Expect for the story when it tries a little to hard near the end..
But the people getting decapitated made it worth it

reply

'I'm President Rathcock and i aprove this message'

reply

I know. The movie was supposed to be terrible, which is what makes it so good. I felt like I got ripped off, which is what the director wanted me to feel. This movie was about as much fun as me shooting myself in the foot. I've felt more entertained standing in line at a grocery store.

I totally get it. It's a piece of crap that I wish I had never watched, which makes it a masterpiece.

reply

I repeat the Movie is CALLED :"Machete kills".

It's like going to a see a movie called "Four wedding and a few anals"
and coming out thinking "What smut"

reply

agree... love the cheesy style of the movie and so many cool actors in it =) they must have a load of fun making it

reply

Then this movie is doing a piss-poor job of getting across of what it's trying to be.

reply

You are the minority cause the b-movie style is overplayed and doesn't work anymore. Only Rodriguez is hanging on to it. It's been dead for years.

reply

R.R does what the hell he wants and he dosnt care what other people think. he likes b-movies. thats what he grew up watching, so this is what he is making right now, b-movies. other then sincity and *beep* like that, his machete movies are GOLD! they are b-movies. not a-movies. so when you go see it and all its cheesyness dont be upset cause Robby R never said this was Avengers.

Grindhouse was a genre of films that were never popular when they were in their prime. These films have always played at second string theatres and were swept under the rug when done.
Why would anyone expect it to be a huge hit these days beyond audiences who view it for nostalgia?

Grindhouse had a 60million+ budget. That's outrageous when considering Roger Corman was making the exact same movies for 100grand.

reply

Ask most people and they haven't even heard of this. I understand it's a targeted group who watch, me also, but the movie just wasn't entertaining. RR makes his money, I like him, he just needs to try a new topic now.

It's the same idea as George Lucas taking a 'B' style action serial and making a modern-day 'A' movie out of it with Indiana Jones.....only obviously Rodriguez is taking the Grindhouse sleazy style and making an 'A-type' production. Personally I think it was hilarious and highly innovative - the double-feature with Tarantino, the fake trailers, aged film, etc.

I'm surprised that fans of the first film wouldn't like 'Machete Kills'. It's just as outrageous and hilarious.

reply

Agree.

I would love for Machete to be along the lines of hi quality of filmmaking like Django. Rodriguez wants trejo to be some sort of star, but his filmmaking choice in throw away cheap thrills are working against him.

I think it's an unfair criticism to say that Rodriguez employs some kind of "low quality" filmmaking because of the sleazy Grindhouse/comedic inspiration - you can disagree with the direction of the story, tone, inspiration etc. But I think it's a wrong choice of words to say 'Django' is "hi quality" filmmaking while implying this film is not. Rodriguez is an amazing talent. The music, editing, cinematography - he does it all.....and on a skimpy budget of like $10-15 million no less.

Skimpy budget? This looked like a SyFy channel movie.

Heck, even Sharknado had a more coherent script and better CGI.

reply

I enjoyed it for what it was- leave the brain at the door entertainment. It kept my attention throughout and had proper laugh out loud moments.

reply

I am really surprised how differently the first and second Machete movies are regarded - for me both work relatively the same. I would just say that the first is a parody of violent cop movies, whereas the second is a parody of Bond movies, in essence. Both funny in their bizarre way, a lot of memorable lines and WTF moments... It is not a movie that should stick together storywise, it is just there for a laugh... I watched it on a bus on the way to my hometown and had great fun. Machete happens! :)

reply

Just watched the flick so this is the first thread I opened. I agree that both machete one and two, as you put it, relatively the same. I hope that people that liked the first film liked the second but reading from your post It doesn't look that way. I absolutely love the hell out of both machete movies and Almost all of R R flicks. It feels like he targets these movies directly at me. These movies along with Tarantinos are the few movies that make me giddy. and the replay value is super high, I rented machete kills for one day but I'm probably going to re watch it because its so fun IMO. I don't mind that it doesn't do well at the box office. I just want it to do well enough that we keep on getting more. People say grindhouse has been dead and its a wash and disagree whole heartedly. There's other niches that I don't like or down right hate bit if people really do love them then let em have them. There's room for all movies now a days. I cannot wait until machete kills again....in space!

Has anyone in this family ever even seen a chicken?

reply

I quite liked the first movie. The second... well, if your script makes less sense than Sharknado, you're doing something wrong. I kind of liked the trailer for the third, but I'm guessing my time would be better spent watching Spaceballs again (and I don't think Spaceballs is a particularly good movie).

reply

Great flick, I thought it was better than the first one. Made me laugh out loud several times. 10/10. Anxiously await Machete Kills Again.
