What does Sheperd keep putting in his mouth and snacking on? It's in the majority of his scenes.
The first time, I notice it could be shelled nuts (peanuts, pistachios, etc.) provided by the doctor's office (Dr. Barden), but throughout most of the film he fidgets with these snacks/nuts. Just wondering. I thought, maybe, it was pills.
Why is this important to his character?

shareDefinitely pistachios. It's a simple way to show that a character doesn't have consideration for others in the room. Cracking a pistachio nut is very loud, and it leaves behind both the shell and other little flaky scraps. So Shepard munching on them would have been distracting for the others trying to have a conversation, and it would have sucked for whoever had to clean up his mess.

A nicely chosen detail, allowing Mr. Combs some good physical action to reveal his character.
Note the raft of shells left on the couch early on, which he appears not to even notice.
I would know right away this guy is more than a quart or two low.
It further showed what a senseless generate prick the guy was. I mean, people were gruesomely killing each other, literally, and he was there stuffing on that stuff as if watching his favorite cartoon on TV. I thought it was a great trait for the character.
