The son....

I really expected the son character to have a larger overall role in the movie.

I know his actions with the main character were supposed to serve as an explanation to the heavy handed foreshadowing of 'that thing that happened last year', but I really expected him to come back after he was stabbed in the leg in the basement, like I thought he might kill her brother and be waiting in her home for her at the end or something.

At one point I actually thought his father might draw him into the game to teach him a lesson but even that didn't happen.

He seems totally wasted.

Why would you want more of him? Imo, he was useless and if he didnt exist in this movie, it wouldnt be any worse (rather the opposite).

reply

I didn't, it's just the way the character is done you think there's going to be more. It just seemed weird to introduce him them shuffling him off. If he was a bigger actor I would swear they ran out of money to pay him and had to write him out quickly or something but he's not so it seems weird.

I guess it would be good for a sequel.. where he hosts his own dinner.

reply

God no. He wasn't nearly good enough or developed enough for that and if he did it would probably so as well as that lady in "Saw" who tried to follow in his footsteps but kept rigging the games so they victim couldn't win.

He's just too unbalanced and sadistic to have any level of balance to his games and I can't see him sticking to the established stuff. I guess that could be the plot. He could start out on script, then go off script and then maybe the players managed to turn the tables on him and the guards could let them because it was part of his father's plan all along or something.

It was just weird in the amount of time the spent setting him up just to have him try and rape that girl in the basement (a situation no one could've seen coming so it's not like he planned it), then she stabs him in the leg and he goes upstairs.

At the very least I expected a scene where the father goes up to chew him out for his actions and ends up killing him or that he killed her brother or something. The whole situation just seemed set up for something that never came.

I hate when movies build up a plot point or a character then they just drop them later in the movie for no reason.

reply

I didnt see him having that much importance but ok. And are you saying that his father wasnt sadistic? He was probably even worse than him. He would be just continuing the family tradition when his father retires.

reply

Well, it just felt like they were trying to build to something with the son at very least they should've let the woman kill him instead of just stabbing him. As it was his part of the story lacks closure.

He spends his whole time being a creep, then he takes advantage of a situation to try and rape that woman, she wounds him and he goes upstairs and is never seen again. It just lacks real closure and feels like a loose end.

Yes, the father is sadistic but he also has rules and he enforces them harshly. The son running a game would just be him being sadistic and probably changing the rules to suit his whims and his desire to watch people suffer for his own amusement.

If would be intresting if maybe his father told him he was letting him run a game but it was really a test and, early on, the son fudges the rules to his own favor so his father takes over and makes him take the place of the player he got killed.

That or he can just go the way of Richie's older brother on "Happy Days" and go up stairs to never be seen or heard from again. :)

reply

The father only cares about himself and his son. He doesnt value life of anyone else. There is no way he would hurt his son.
He was there to learn how to do it right. So if he died that would kind of ruin the "all powerful lambrick foundation" idea.

reply

Okay, but it just felt like they were building up to something then it never paid off. He tries to rape that one woman, gets stabbed, goes up stairs and is never seen again. It just seemed weird.

Felt like it needed some sort of closure, anything.

reply

Well Shep (his dad) didnt get any closure as well. He just continues to do stuff next year again.

reply

That's true. Can't argue that. :)
