A 30-year old 'girl' and a 45-year old 'man'. Shocking!

Despite good acting, I have a really hard time buying the emotional side of dramas like these when they insist on using an actress who is so much older than her character.

I'm perfectly aware that this is nothing new at all in the movie industry, but to me it becomes kind of distracting when the supposed age difference is an important point in the plot.

The actual age difference between Felicity Jones and Guy Pierce is so small that most people wouldn't even blink at it in real life. Again, she does a great job, I just think they should've cast a younger actress to make it more believable.

IMDb-boards would be less confusing if people would mark their signatures clearly.

I agree with you. They should've gotten a much younger actress.

Jones can pass for 20ish no problem. I've known 18 year olds that look much older than her (in her films at least, without a good makeup artist she probably doesn't normally look so young). The fact that you know her age shouldn't be distracting.

Pierce looks his age and then some.

But when you host an exchange student, you are standing in for their parents. So super creepy borderline incesty.

I didn't know her actual age when I was watching this and I didn't feel she's more than 18. Things may have changed if I knew it.

I didn't know her age when watching the movie, and she seemed to me like she was in her early 20s.

The issue in the movie isn't their age difference but the fact that he's married.

reply

There are plenty of films where the woman is married to a older man and wants out Because she wants the same thing as this guy did.

reply

People posted the same issue with Anna Paquin in the film Margaret not realizing that the film had been shoot a good several years before release.

Age isn't what is important. The actress clearly looked the part and gave a great performance. So what does her actually real age matter.

I didn't have any problems with it. The actress has a very young face. I bought that she was a high school student.

exactly! I agree, 30 and 45 is still a big age difference. If I saw a couple like that with a 15 year age difference, yes I would certainly notice and be surprised! thats a much younger woman with an older man regardless.

"My friend is 21 years old and her mother is 37, when my friend is 30 her mother's going to be 46."

You realize that that is not exactly typical, right?

Well said, the Guy Pearce character was pretty pathetic for the reasons you stated.

two biological factors: hypergamy and coolidge effect. That explains 90% of what comes out of hollywood.

she's a semi-orphan trying to secure a higher class man, while she is a new plaything for him to toss around for a while before getting bored with her fast.

reply

I really thought she was like 18-20 lol
