The first thing my wife asked me when the movie ended?

"What is the point of this movie?"

So?

reply

The same as most movies. To entertain.

Your wife sounds like an idiot. Do you know any hot 18-year-old British exchange students you could have a fling with?

Seriously, I'm sure your wife is a nice person, but I hate when people ask that. And they ONLY ask that about movies they DON'T like. Most people couldn't tell you the "point" of movies they really do like.

And movies that do have a "point" are usually really bad. Why make a two-hour movie if it can all be boiled down to one obvious "point".

You have a point about Amy Ryan's character, Megan. I thought Megan was the weak link in the story. According to commentary on the DVD, the theme is supposed to be the dilemma of loving two people at the same time, equally. Keith is supposed to be torn between two women: drawn to his emotional connection with Sophie, but also deeply attached to his beloved wife of many years. We see the connection with Sophie, the fact that she understands him and speaks to the unfulfilled areas of his life. What we don't see is Megan's appeal. There are scenes where the film seems to hint at the affection between them, but the script makes her come across as insensitive, unconcerned with her husband's aspirations and his dissatisfaction with their life. True, there had to be a reason he was missing something and was therefore attracted to the promise Sophie represented, but making Megan the cause of his restricted life makes it hard to believe his feelings are equally strong for both women.

Tell me the truth. Are we still in the game?

I feel that Megan does have a connection with her husband and that she is actually a very nurturing character. I liked that this movie developed the characters in a very subtle manner. Although it appears as though she doesn't support Keith's dream, when he is actually successful the first thing she does is to celebrate with ice-cream and congratulate him. I believe she is a realist and obviously worries about security, but that doesn't make her a bad person. She encourages him to practice and is obviously going through changes in her life at this time as well, with their daughter becoming independent and at an age when she won't be needed as much. The climax causes Keith to realise the importance of his family. Although he has an emotional connection to Sophie, there has been a strong connection all these years with his family and this matters more to him. This movie is so well done in the way that sympathy is felt for all the characters. I felt for all the characters in this movie (including Megan). In a way it identifies why boundaries are in place, and how difficult it is to remain within these boundaries.

The comments on this string are very satisfying to read. I also wondered how Megan could be so dense about her husband's pain. But I felt, as jcquinn said, that Megan was nurturing -- she got them settled in that beautiful home, tried to interest her husband in their daughter's swimming, and was very practical. Practical is a necessary skill in life, even if it's not as sexy as playing music beautifully. I was judgmental about the exchange student too. C'mon! Maybe she had a need for a male parental figure after her father let her be raised by her aunt and uncle, and after her uncle died. But here's what I don't get. Keith had just won the cello chair and could quit teaching and pursue his music, right? So, why run away? His life was just becoming more what he wanted it to be.

I don't know your wife. But the point is clearly to explore the tear that can happen when one feels unfulfilled with there life, and another is able to help fill that void.

It is a loaded question though.

I disagree. THe point of the movie was clear.

But so what?

This seemed like a student film.

I could go on & on how good a film this is: acting, lighting, cinematography, and on..

But the director is an arts student who wrote his own script two weeks before final projects are due.

So what? Who cares?
