Is Vida (MJ's mom) really that mean or is she playing it up for tv?

She never has anything nice to say about anything, like nothing. I know she's an old lady but she comes across as EXTREMELY unlikeable. Personally, I would never want to be around her. She was totally pushing Mike's buttons at that bullcrap ceremony and she knew it. Everybody wanted her to stop asking about Jessica; they finally changed the subject briefly; and then she went right back. She clearly knew why Jessica wasn't there. I strongly believe in respecting elders but respect is something that is earned. Just because someone is older that does not give them the right to start $hit. Mike's really gross but I was on his side. There's only so much abuse one person can take.

I agree. She was completely out of line. She wants to mentally crucify MJ, then go right ahead. That's your kid, but the way she speaks to MJ's friends is not okay. I would be embarrassed if my mother behaved that way. Kudos to MJ for continuing to have a relationship with her.

I think that she has toxic personality disorder. I don't see a kind drop of blood in her heart (assuming she has one).

Ehh...She's obviously been hurt a lot and she wants to steer MJ in a direction that will ensure long-term happiness, material comfort, & status. I think she comes from a place of bitterness & pain and I feel sorry for her.

I think she comes from a place of narcissism. She abandoned her family for another man and was devastated when a relationship built on lies didn't work out -- SHOCKER!!!

I don't feel sorry one bit for her.

She reminds me of my MIL -- never has anything nice to say about anyone except her sons, whom she expects to cater to her every whim.

Wait, what? Is that Vida's story? If so, wow! Do they talk about this in the show? She's more dreadful than I thought then.

Yes I seem to recall MJ saying that she and her dad only had each other because Vida left them and Vida had her heart broken. Oh poor thing home wrecker dumped you after you left your family.

Her dad seems like a real sweetheart. Whenever they show him you can tell he has this really gentle demeanor.

Too bad he didn't rub off more on MJ.

Narcissist BPD. She is vile and evil. There is not enough therapy in the world to fix the wounds she causes MJ every time they speak "I will only be proud of you once you are perfect" among other Via-l isms. MJ should cut her out permanently-why she is at every event the kids have is beyond me. Sickening!!

It gives her a storyline and makes people more sympathetic toward MJ. Still, I agree, she'll be much happier if she kept her mom at a distance. Her dad is so sweet. She should put all her energies toward him and get all of her parental love from him.

Hopefully Tommy's mom is nice.

I can't believe I'm saying this but this was one time I was cheering on Mike, whom I can't stand. It's about time someone spoke up to that witch. The thing is these women from these traditional cultures will talk this way because they know that anyone younger than them can't say anything without looking disrespectful. My MIL is exact same way.

My take on the cast is that with the exception of Asa and Mike their families seem to have all come out of Iran to the West with money that was most likely not theirs to begin with and they have continued to live off that money, GG and MJ being being the worst parasites of all.

But I do admire her patience with Vida, who is awful.

What do you mean they came with money that wasn't theirs?

They probably all had money in Iran, which is why they were able to buy a plane ticket and escape in the first place! They had money and earned money in Iran which is why they would have been targets by the government to begin with!

You think they are all drug cartel or mafia members? Nope! Hard work and strong educations earned them money, then hard work, education, and a new life helped them earn more money when living here! What is so hard to comprehend about that?

Are you under the mistaken impression that the same government that you admit targeted the middle and upper classes allowed them to leave Iran after leisurely selling their assets and transferring their legitimate financial holdings? They got out when they could with what they could in the wake of the shah's overthrow.

And Reza himself said last season that MJ hasn't made a real estate sale in ages because she doesn't really work at it. When was the last time they filmed her in her real estate office?

GG is the daughter of a wealthy architect, who spoiled his daughter rotten. That's how GG has money.

MJ earns her own money as a realtor, and has a BA from an LA University.

What do you mean they earn no money now and live off of stolen money from Iran? Revolution happened in 79, nearly 40 years ago, how long do you think their "stolen" money would have lasted??

I'm not a big fan of Asa but she was right on when she said "Vida is a bitter old woman". Andy laughs and encourages it because it's sooo funny to get the old lady with the accent to say shockingly rude and unkind things to her daughter and friends. I feel sorry for Tommy because that will not be an easy road, especially when MJ refuses for some reason to cut Vida out of her life. MJ probably has Stockholm Syndrome after all these years.

At some point, especially if she has kids, she should cut off her mother. Tough to do, but she is just so toxic. Sad if that would be allowed to carry over to another generation.
