Awful in every way

Long, drawn out boring waste of time..

reply

This movie was not made for people with no attention span. Unless you care to actually talk about what you didn't like about this film, I guess I will assume it's the fact that it didn't have big explosions or lots of action. In which case, you should go back and watch a John Woo flick to make you feel better. Most of us actually thought this film was pretty amazing. Well acted and provocative.

I think you're being unfair. The original criticism offered next to nothing in analysis. At least you expanded on yours. The films does have it's flaws but to merely brand it as awful in every way sounds like a review from a small child.

If you want to be critical about the film that's fine, but folk should give a little more insight.

reply

I don't see the OP branding this movie as "awful in every way". I think that's a huge exaggeration and you are also being unfair.

I haven't seen the movie so I can't comment on it. However, "long", "drawn out" and "boring" are pretty important insights and they may be more than enough for some movies.

reply

Well, since the title of the post is "Awful in every way," you can't really say that the OP is not branding this movie that way... That is exactly what they are doing, without giving any real insight as to why they thought so. Contrary to popular belief, "boring" is not a useful insight...

reply

I somehow missed the title of the post. I was being stupid, sorry about that. However, I still I stand by comment and think "long", "drawn out" and "boring" are important insights and they are useful, too. I personally never care about those insights and decide for myself, but that sometimes doesn't change the fact that a movie is boring.

reply

My point is that "boring" and "drawn out" are completely subjective terms, and without some subsequent explanation as to what the OP thought made this film boring and drawn out, the only thing I am left to think is that he/she does not have the attention span required to watch most plot-driven movies. Yes, they tend to be longer and certainly more drawn out, but you know that going into the movie. This is a period piece about life in Germany, just after the end of WWII. If you are expecting some mile-a-minute action flick, then you came into it with the wrong expectations. That being said, even a period piece can be pretentious and drawn out and boring, but without sometime more substantial than just those prefaces, the whole comment is meaningless and not helpful to anyone who is seriously considering watching this film, or to anyone who is seeking thoughtful discussion about it. So, while as you say, these insights may be useful, they are only so, when accompanied by some sort of idea as to what caused the viewer to come to this conclusion. That's just my bit, though. If you haven't seen the movie, I suggest you watch it and judge for yourself.

reply

You seem to believe you will gain credibility by referring to others as "tards."
John Woo? "Transformers"? You think these mentions are in any way relevant?

Yet you did say it was "better than average" - perhaps you are the "tard", just because someone likes a film that you only kind of like better than average. To say a film is "predictable in parts" says nothing. All movies are predictable in parts. Some are entirely predictable. It is the telling that often matters, not surprises.

the only feeling I had watching this movie was I'd like to nuke Berlin. letting aside its hidden nazi message.

berlin has a hidden nazi message? do tell...

reply

You do know that this is an Australian production, don't you?
(Well, there might be Nazis in Australia, I don't know.)

reply

It was a joint German and Australian production. It takes place in Germany and all the characters are German. It's about the end of WWII in Germany.

reply

The worst part of this film was the over implication to the fact that the main character had a unaltered vagina.

Like that *beep* important or something.

Your kind (terrorists) would be happy to nuke the whole world not just Israel.

P.S.

See, I didn't call you nazi.

Misogyny much? Good lord. Were you beat by your grandmother as a child or something?

I guess Terence Malik must be a woman too.

...and how many so-called "chick flicks" are directed by men? Bluesdoctor's whole argument is kind of analogous to people who might say, for instance, black people can only make films about black people and black issues, etc, etc....
I thought the film had great emotional weight and it wasn't really about the Holocaust at all. When Gunther's (?) twin was killed, and the children having no time to mourn, man that was horrible...just the stunned, uncomprehending look on Gunther's face....

Going by Upstream colour Shane Carruth must be a woman, also....

"Hot lesbian witches!"

Thanks that was the most accurate description of this mess. I was only recently watching Come and See for the first time, "another" movie about children during WW2, what a disgraceful garbage Lore is in comparison.

reply

Go watch Michael Bay movies and crap like that, this is not the kind of cinema for you.

You've done some bad things, sweetie.

I loved this film, I was hooked from the first scene I usually hate war films and anything to do with Adolf Hitler

reply

I enjoyed the movie. I felt the performances wear good and honest. The concept is brilliant. The wardrobe was great as well, you'd be surprised how some decently budgeted movies get this wrong. Well not wrong, but it seems like (for whatever reason) they get their hands on the wrong resources.

My critique of this movie is that I didn't enjoy how modern the picture looked. Argo is beautiful because it matched the time period of the film. Although, I know that the 1940s was black and white but I feel if it had some color touches, like Saving Private Ryan. And that the story ran a little too long, the last thirty min starting getting too slow, and started feeling a bit like a novel.

Good movie though, enough of those heist like WWII movies.
