Just some thoughts before I watch this.

I got this dvd before I knew about the real sex or the controversy, and I haven't seen it yet. I didn't realize it would be such politically fraught movie watching experience. Anyway, I've seen my fair share of low budget film festival movies and porn so I don't think I'll be particularly offended by the sex or low-end production values. I haven't yet formed an opinion about the whole banned in Australia thing. Australia does have a history of banning movies with lots of violence and sex in them. After admitting 9 Songs, it does seem like they have a double standard, but the Donkey Love movie was a documentary, not a fictional story that uses actual sex to... uh... enhance the narrative.

Anyway, after I watch the movie I'll post my opinions. If anyone cares.

It was OK, not wonderful, not terrible. It looked good, decent cinematography. The acting was all right. The premise was pretty good. Thirtysomething gay man needs to leave SF to return to the midwest. I don't think "real sex" helped. Any deeper truth about reationships or sex would have been just as effective with "fake movie sex". It feels like a gimmick to draw attention to an otherwise slight film.

I think this is something of a missed opportunity. The movie could have been about why so many artists feel compelled to cultivate an artistic personality and lifestyle to nurture their creative souls. When the main character worries that the people of Columbus won't appreciate his performance art, I groaned a little in my heart. Stop trying to be an ARTIST and just do something. The writer/director may have touched on this when Jesse realizes he's spent 10 years distracting himself. Yeah, if you spend all your time being a hipster, you're not spending enough time doing art.

Now when I think about this compared to Weekend http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1714210/?ref_=nv_sr_4 or The Outs http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2587452/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1, all I can say to Travis Mathews is find someone who likes to write, and the time spent on the sex distracted you from the story.
