The ending ruined it.

I was really enjoying it up until the end. The movie touched on many aspects: family, friends, frustration, finding self, etc..

But the ending just seemed far fetched and over the top. Especially with dialogues where the girl says "he looks like a god!".. I laughed at how corny that sounded. Kidnapping a guy from the hospital to play on a parking garage rooftop, rounding anyone and everyone together smoothly, etc. Just seemed stupid and over the top.

It reminded me of the movie Premium Rush where at the end all the NYC bikers come together and put on a flash mob sequence.

I did think the ending was a bit over the top, but they didn't sugarcoat it. The fat kid's still going to have a crummy life, he didn't get the girl, I'm sure his friend is not going to have an easy recovery from drug use. But it's a start.

I really liked the dad in this movie, though. He starts out as an ass, but he actually loves his sons and makes an effort to help them out. I was surprised, because I rarely like the parents in movies.

So yeah, the ending is a little too cinematic, but the only other choice was to turn it into a tragedy (everybody fails) and I think they took the path of least resistance and tried to turn it into a "feel good" movie as much as possible. I still dug it.

The ending is true to the book it's based on, which is what I like about it. They could have changed it, like they did a few other things (Marcus' name was originally Curt, Isabel isn't in the book, set in Seattle instead of NYC). I think if they had tried to go any other way with the ending (darker or lighter), it would have upset a lot of fans of the book. The ending is open ended, leaves the viewer (or reader) wondering if everything is going to be okay or not.
