Why didn't they try to use it to smash down a wall to escape?

I don't know the layout of the building, but I think they'd be able to get to the other side of the building if they smashed down a wall or two.

Even before I saw the sledgehammer I thought it would be better to go out the back wall one brick at a time. Once I saw the sledgehammer I thought it would be easy to break out of the back of the building.

To be honest they were on the ground floor they could just go into one of the flats and smash a window to get out.

Why would the guy who started climbing down go off the top off the building when he could have gone out of the window of one of the ground floor flats?

There are many tower blocks in London that have flats on only one side (from the corridor) although they usually have apartments that are on two levels with the upper level spanning the entire building (ie the access corridors are on every other floor).
