Why?

Let me say that I quite enjoyed the movie and found the ending particularly effective. But why was the Ray Wise character so intent on exposing the Marrow to the world if he was so protective of it? I would imagine he would do anything to keep it secret. But he would lead the guys on and then get angry when they wNted to know more. Ideas?
