Alan Arkin

Taking nothing away from Frank Langella who, along with Susan Sarandon, deliver the only two good performance in the film but I just kept seeing Alan Arkin every time I looked at Frank, knowing he could have brought just that little extra touch to it that, for me, Langella couldn't quite provide.

that is exactly how I felt. this role would be perfect for arkin.

reply

Rubbish, Frank Langella was superb in the role. Arkin maybe but not as good. FL nailed the role.

reply

I didn't say Langella wasn't superb, in fact I praised his role.
As for Arkin, unless there's a (seriously unlikely) remake, I guess we'll never know if he could have done better but my belief and opinion is that he could have.

reply

Disagree. Not this role. Arkin is a bit more... broad I guess I'd say. John Mahoney is another I love but they both feel just that extra little bit like actors that others don't.

I am routinely surprised by Frank Langella, and this is one where I keep having to remind myself that he's acting. Really well done. Hard to imagine anyone doing better. Oh, except I just saw Red (the other one) where Brian Cox was just amazing as well. He could have done this.

I really hate these kinds of posts. They do not really serve any purpose. The role is played, the money is spent, the film is made - live with it, quit the second guessing about the castings.

reply

Casting in films should be acceptable evaluation just as much as any other aspect.
Yes, I do accept it happened; AGAIN, I thought Langella did well but even though it won't change anything, why stay so rigid about it?

The point of these posts is to let the mind wander a little (which I think is perfectly reasonable) and open up a discussion and debate on actors and their abilities.

I find Arkin to be a little overrated to be honest. Loved him in Little Miss Sunshine, but he's been trying to duplicate that kind of shtick in every role since. Frankly, I don't think Arkin could have pulled off the dramatic parts well enough.

Arkin is great but Langella played the role to perfection. Arkin may have more charisma but I'm not sure he'd have nailed the subtleties of the character in the same way.

reply

I feel just the opposite.

I love Alan Arkin, but it was so nice and refreshing to see someone who isn't super famous. I was able to appreciate him as Frank the character rather than himself. Plus Frank langella is great and it was nice to see him in a lead role for a change.

Langella was perfect. It's hypothetical and unnecessary to speculate on why x would have done better.

You may be comparing Langella's performance to Alan Arkin's performance in The Incredible Burt Wonderstone where Arkin plays an elderly magician with Alzheimer's.
