How long until we have robots like this?

20 years? 25? 30? I hope they're around by then so they can take care of me.

Of course, one big problem is that they would, of course, be programmed to know right from wrong and wouldn't be able to commit crimes as demonstrated in the movie. But other than that, I like the cooking and the cleaning!

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

Depending on what you meant by "robots like this" ... I'd say around 250 years or maybe much longer from now, but that is because it would take so long to prime a robot to understand the human perception of life - if ever. To do household chores and walk, but to act in the world with humans, to do human things is another level, and then to actually think and make decisions, excluding the moral stuff is yet another level, and then to create robots like Issac Asimov's that behave and have a code they cannot break ... another level entirely ... and all of it might be impossible or take very much longer.

1) Within our lifetime. Probably about when there's self driving cars. I definitely think it will be under 20 years.

2) The Japanese are working hard on implementing robotics to replace health care workers.

3) Those robots won't have the kind of AIs that will allow them to learn new tasks. Computer labs are hard at work to do just that, but the ones that enter the market first will just be limited to handle designed tasks; like a Roomba vaccuum cleaner.

True. It would be interesting but seeing as how my R2D2 couldn't even do the simplest of tasks it said it could (motion detector, come to the sound of your voice, bring you a coke) I'd say it's along way off.

Leave it to the Japanese to be the ones to make advancements though. They sure love their robots. If anything revolutionary's going to happen it will come from them.

We won't know until we have them. Right now the biggest problem is Artificial Intelligence and the sheer hardware and processing power required to attain the desired level of self-programming that ROBOT displays. It is going to take a breakthrough and we haven't had it...yet.

Watta ya lookn here for?
