Marc Cros - Aristide Maillol?

Is Jean Rochefort playing the French sculptor Aristide Maillol for Fernando Trueba.
Or was it just the Art Director's whim to use Maillol style work - as it was appropriate for the period?

reply

Indeed, Rochefort is playing Maillol. If you google him, you'll see that the sculpture Rochefort finally settles on is among Maillol's works. We need to add that Rochefort's performance is exceptional, and it may well be his last.

I do wonder why so few people have discussed this film. It is foreign and cerebral - that can kill it for some audiences in this country, unfortunately. They are missing a true gem!

Agree completely. The film is full of strong feelings and memorable moments. It's very beautiful too.

I think good black and white film adds texture and for this film, where he's skecthing with charcoals and sculpting with clay, the texture is needed.
