I agree with your post. The film, while not a total failure, is messy.
I felt the pedophilia subplot was unnecessary to show. They could have kept it ambiguous.
And I doubt if the daughter would have let her son spen the whole summer with Peters knowing he was a child molester!
All that said, I thought Clark Peters was very good.
But yes, a dramatic and linear mess.
