Help me figure this out (spoilers)

I know most people here did not like this movie. I didn't think it was bad, but I am no movie critic. I look to watch movies to take me away from my busy life.

Anyway...the van was full of strangers. I assume it was a resort shuttle van? Someone mentioned why they were getting away, and Val said "to reconnect with his marriage" So it was some kind of retreat maybe?

Here is where I need help. ***warning spoilers***

These strangers were the McKnight family reincarnated? Adam was Sarah, Courtney was Sean. I am going to assume that Val's character was the cheating husband.Brooklyn was the mom. Then I am lost.

Was the Doctor supposed to be the grandmother? Was Isaac the older sister? Is that why Jack knew Adam was the favorite?
Why did everyone come back the opposite sex except Val and Brooklyn?

Just a few questions. LOL

I'm totally confused too! How come the graves of brooklyn and Isaac were there only minutes after they died? And what the hell was the whole story about in general lol.

Then Jack said when people die in a traumatic way; their spirits stay behind, but the boy didn't die the same night as the others so ho come he as there?

Here's my question. We had a doctor *and* a med student and yet for some reason they thought the best advice for someone with a head injury was to "get some rest?" Seriously? Too bad they never learned about concussions in med school...

Actually there is no danger in sleeping with a head injuury, the only problem is that one cannot detect any further drop in conscienous or cognitive function. The real problem is drinking alcohol with a possible bleed on the brain.

Just who the h*ll was Jack supposed to be? A ghost, a demon, a strange guy who never died?????

reply

2 brothers = 2 sisters
Foster child girl = adopted bro
Unhappy couple = parents
Doctor = aunt in wheelchair

Whichever character appeared to them, that's who they were in a previous life. This much, I understand. Jack was a servant and is now the agent of destiny, collecting them all to fulfill the cycle.

What I don't understand is why? Why does Jack or destiny want the cycle to repeat? What does he, or it, hope to accomplish? How did it arrange for the reincarnations to all be in the right place at the right time?

I just watched this movie but I didn't make the connection that you did - that each of the original family members appeared to one specific character. Was that really the case? I could have sworn that the boy appeared to more than one of the van passengers. I don't recall Val Kilmer's character seeing the dad, and I know for sure that Brooklyn saw the little girls - she was almost pulled under the bed by one. I remember the doctor seeing the aunt right before his own throat was slit, but hadn't he seen someone else as well? It would be a unifying concept if the filmmakers had bothered to present it this way, with a 1:1 correlation between family members and the modern characters.

I think you posed really good questions. You probably thought about this far more intelligently than anyone involved in the film. I had similar questions of my own, but I don't think any of them can/will be answered. The whole plot was extremely contrived and unsatisfying, IMO. The "twist" was ridiculous, and the acting was so bad and the story so fractured that I didn't really care what happened to any of the characters. The only cohesive part of the movie was the family flashback that was shown in the first few minutes.
