Mistakes list : Add your own *Spoilers*

1) When the 16 women compete to become Navigators, they say 10 will go through to the race stage. But as the cars are lining up it says there are 11 cars/drivers. So does that mean 1 of the drivers doesn't have a navigator?

2) The voice-over says at 1 point, about the audience being able to pay more to be able to view INSIDE the cars, but Carl/Frankenstein has his mask off while he's driving & isn't the audience meant to be kept in the dark about who Frankenstein actually is?

3) The girl racer, when she meets her end, as the cars explode, Frankensteins car flys through the air over the car? where did he come from, he should have been way a head at this point or did he over lap her or was he just sitting there waiting?

4) When the drug-deals/gunrunners follow them to the finishing line, Frankenstein fires onwards at the front of a vehicles coming towards him, but the back of it explodes first?

5) When they drive into the computer room they drive directly into the middle of the stage area where Nile York is handcuffed, how did they not run him over & kill him?

6) Not long after (see above) the fire comes poring out of the tunnel, but seconds later Satana/Salina (what is the characters actual name? comes up on screen as 1 name, but different to the Character name in the credits?) is at the front having an interview with reporters, how did she or the others get out of that explosion unharmed or alive?

7) At the end, when billionaire Niles York is mistaken for Frankenstein, how is this possible? anyone who knows him / worked with him could clearly see it was him, from his face (burnt, but that 100%, can still see it's him), his voice & also a simple DNA test would have cleared up his true identity.

I'm sure there are more................

Add more if you found any

9) The Voice Announcer says after the end of the 1st Race that 7 Racers remained and lists them out "...14K, Olga, Baby, Psycho, and Nero have all survived." However the On Screen Board lists someone named "Fury" so who the hell is "Fury"?

You guys think they wouldn't have a cam in the MOST popular racer in the whole thing? He's the one everybody wants to see. And if they were going to go the 'every car but him' route, all it takes is a 3 second explanation planted in the dialogue. The fact they didn't means it's most likely a mistake. A freaking glaring one too.

I had low expectation, and this didn't even meet those. Not even as good as the prequel to the remake, which says a lot...

reply

they also didn't show anyone order the "inside car cam", did they? why are you making such a huge thing out of nothing? Surely if someone did order the frank inside car, they'd know Carl Lucas was Frank and so would the media. The fact no one knows suggests that they didn't offer that in the car of frankenstein.

For a guy who hates the movie, you pick the dumbest thing to complain about.

reply

So you're theory is that they explained the whole 'cam inside the car' thing only to have it never brought up again because...what? Why? What would be the point of that? Not sure why showing anybody order it means anything, we didn't see people go to the bathroom either, what's your point?

You're just making things up that were never mentioned or even hinted at to fill in gaps the film makers missed. I could have mentioned the boring pace, the too choppy editing, the amateur acting, no reason to care about any of the characters, the so-so car stunts, the terrible camera placement, badly choreographed fight scenes, etc as to why I didn't like it. I didn't do any of that because it didn't pertain to the THREAD TOPIC. Can't believe I even had to explain that...

PS: Since when is one post about a mistake added to a thread about adding mistakes 'making a huge deal'?

"My first name is Mister, my middle name is the period between, and my last name is T." - Mr. T

reply

How exactly did the filmmakers "miss" this? They put in the line, didnt they?

Your "mistake" isn't a mistake. They never address it again in the film because its a non issue.

Listen, there are tons of mistakes in the film, I just think its weird you're obsessing about this one.

reply

Oh, was there a line about no cam being in Frank's car? If I missed it then you are correct, it's not a mistake. But as far as I, and other posters know, it was never mentioned again. It didn't bother you, neat. You don't consider it an omission, cool. What's your point now? That if you reply enough times saying it didn't bother you it won't bother me or the other poster(s) either for some reason? I didn't say it in and of itself made me not like the movie did I? Again I didn't delve into that list because it didn't have anything to do with the thread.

PS: First it's not a non issue/non mistake, then in the next sentence it's a mistake that i'm able to obsess over...

"My first name is Mister, my middle name is the period between, and my last name is T." - Mr. T

reply

You mad, bro?

You suggest the filmmakers made a mistake by saying fans can pay to see inside their favorite car b/c then they would see who Frankenstein is? Correct?

That's your mistake.

All I am saying is that the film shows to what lengths they go to hide Frankenstein. He wasn't even allowed to tell his team who he is. So while they can say, "access your favorite car" I didn't think they meant Frankenstein - since they already show us how far they go to hide him.

You saw that as a mistake. That they either should not have had the line, or that they should've said "all but frankenstein".

Fine.

I just think you're assuming a mistake when it really wasn't. They simply didn't explain or show that you couldn't access Frank's car.

But isn't that safe to assume given the ending? Obviously if people had accessed frank's car, everyone would've known Carl Lucas was alive, but at the end, they don't.

A mistake would be that they have a graphic that says "Race Day 1" and then have the navigator fight, everyone goes to bed and the next day they race. The graphic was 1 day early.

To me, that's a mistake.

reply

Haha, I love a good meme, thanks for that! Definitely not mad, just explaining why some people could consider it a mistake. You don't, I got it. You say to assume based on what happened later, as I said to me that's filling in a hole the maker left. Anyway, that's all, not a big deal.

As I said I enjoyed the 2nd more than I thought I would, which is why I was let down by this, considering it's the same cast/director...

Related to #5 & #6- it takes them about a minute to drive through the tunnel to the studio- which mean it's at least 1/2 mile, more likely a full mile, from the entrance of the tunnel to the studio. Yet, when the explosion happens (who knew computers and video monitors were so flammable?), we see a fireball coming out of, and damaging the entrance to the tunnel. Strangely, though, not only Satana/Selina gets out unscathed- so do our heroes, who (we see later) ejected from the car while it was in the studio. Apparently, all three of them are fireproof.

Also, when the person who jumps the start is killed by the missile- you don't actually see the missile hit the car- there is just an explosion under the car. They apparently forgot to animate the missile in in post-production. (It's possible I'm wrong about this one- but I did check twice.)

Yeah, and I was bothered about the whole "cameras in cockpits" thing, too- and I don't remember a line about there not being one in Frankenstein's car.

Which leads me to this- Frankenstein's mask- is it metal? Is it fabric? Is it attached to the hood? During the fight when they first get to Africa, his whole hood comes off with the mask- and when it's seen on the ground, it's crumpled, like it was cloth or latex. Most other times, it's separate from the hood, and clearly either metal, ceramic, or plastic.

Last one, which is reliant on my memory of Death Race 2- at the end of that one, wasn't it strongly implied that the navigator realized Frankenstein was Carl, from something he said?

I'm not sure about point one, maybe i missed something but yes point 2 got me thinking which is why i'm on this board. It's a sloppy mistake just like the film which is strange as DR2 is a really good movie and is done by the same director. I'm also sure David Carradine didn't have a Scottish accent lol.

reply

but who's to say York is the guy Statham replaces?
They still could have other frankenstein's

reply

lol but that means tht frankenstein, the almighty great and powerful driver got to 4 races under Lucas and then sat there losing for at least 3 more races if Machine Gun Joe who wasnt in the prequels somehow got to 3 race wins. though that is possibly fixed by saying it happened while frank was getting surgery, but then why didnt he get sent to the kalahari?

also, the part about cameras in cars was silly, and easily seen as a mistake cos the only way they could explain it would be to say Frankenstein is so ugly we had to blur his face because they wouldnt not have a cam in his car.

oh and both the Katrina and Lists were heavily hinted as knowing that Carl was Frank at the end of DR2 but then they were so cranky.

also question, it says that the racers get their freedom if they win 5, i could maybe understand if the navigator does as well, but nowhere does it say that the pit crew does too, so why didnt Lucas just tell them he was acting as frankenstein to get them all out of prison and say it right away when they got all cranky?

p.s. Frankenstein may have been the monster, but in the book the scientist was frankly more a monster than his creation.

reply

Given that Paul W.S. Anderson is the writer of these films and his track record on doing whatever fits for whatever direction he want's to take it (Resident Evil, for example), is there any wonder that this big of a screw up comes in the first five minutes. I can get a different writer screwing something like this up, but when you're following up on your own story it's a bit ridiculous to forget how you left the previous entry.

There's also the small matter of Lucas' 2nd degree burns covering 85% of his body healing remarkably well; even with plastic surgery he'd be a bit more well done that he is.

Weyland also had no idea who Frankenstein is, or if he was even real before his unveiling, yet Inferno has Weyland being the one who oversaw the surgery (and paid for it) then making a deal with him to free the whole team if he wins five.

but nowhere does it say that the pit crew does too, so why didnt Lucas just tell them he was acting as frankenstein to get them all out of prison and say it right away when they got all cranky?
This is what I mean by Mr. Anderson doing whatever, whether it clashes with his own earliest entry or not. As far as Inferno was concerned, the deal was now made with Weyland even though only the media girl knew he was still alive and it was made specifically for the whole crew. Part of that arrangement was that he couldn't let them know his identity even though, as you said, it was pretty much hit over the head in the previous entry that they do. Katrina even smiles when he responds in the manner he did.

Theres some significant retcons going on in this film

reply

I think someone is jealous of mr. anderson.

- what screw up comes in the first 5 minutes? How is saying Frankenstein has won 4 races a mistake? Do you know how this bridges to connect to Death Race 2008? Frankenstein at the end of this wants "revenge". Perhaps he races to kill next instead of to win. You can't say this is a mistake. It simply hasn't been spelled out yet.

- Do you know how much timed passed from DR2 to DR3? They go out of their way to say that plastic surgery was performed. Did we ever see his bare legs? His back? How do you know how much still is not damaged?

- After September Jones dies, you don't think he went into his own prison and found out who Frankenstein really was? In the Hospital room at the start of this film, they even say they had a meeting long before this. Weyland plucked Lucas out of his bed to have him make love to Katrina. It's his prison. You don't think the owner is going to know who his "star" is?

- And it is clearly spelled out in the film that Lucas was told not to tell ANYONE who he was. He believed Weyland could do something bad to his team. Even though he was trying to help all of them, he didn't want to risk that. In this film he even says, he was wrong not to trust them. This is not the film's mistake. this is a character mistake. Character's make mistakes all the time.

- Lastly, get over the hate.

reply

I think someone is jealous of mr. anderson.
Not hardly. This is the man on record as saying the first film is a prequel to Death Race 2000, not a remake, which is completely undone with the next two films.
How is saying Frankenstein has won 4 races a mistake?
I never said that about 4 races. Lucas obviously had won four in between the two films. This was not the mistake I was referring to. The mistakes were mentioned in the rest of what I wrote, making your next point meaningless.
They go out of their way to say that plastic surgery was performed.
So did I. Look at the left side his face in the scene with him and Weyland talking then shortly thereafter where he looks pretty much normal save for the scar where his cheek was torn open from the corner of his mouth back. Never mind the fact that half his lips were missing and, as I said, no amount of plastic surgery is going to make you look that good, or give you perfectly formed lips that move like normal. Aside form that one scar, it looks like it never happened.
After September Jones dies, you don't think he went into his own prison and found out who Frankenstein really was?
Look at the continuity between the end of DR2 and how things are expressed through dialogue in flashbacks in DR3. They don't fit. Sure, they apparently couldn't get Lauren back for a flashback, but the (original) deal was made with her, not with Weyland as it's stated in the dialogue in DR3.
And it is clearly spelled out in the film that Lucas was told not to tell ANYONE who he was.
This is either being willfully blind or just plain contrarian. I clearly noted that this arrangement was made. My point was that this goes against the end of DR2 where it was pretty much hit over the head, by Lists comment and Katrina's grin/reaction when asking if he has a name and getting the same response he gave earlier in the film, that they know or have it figured out; suddenly, in DR3, they have no clue. You ignored that important component to my previous comment.

Go ahead and rip it apart. Just before I wrote that I had a non stop chronological Death Race marathon with DR2, DR3, and DR. It really stands out seeing the end of 2 right up against the beginning of three.
Lastly, get over the hate.
The only hate going on here is you hating on my observations. I happen to like most of his work (except his vision on Three Musketeers), I just also happen to notice he's not much for continuity with his own stories and frequently makes plot necessitated alterations to that continuity when it suits him.

reply

Your first 2 points agree with me so I am not sure why you responded. To your other points...

His deal with Jones was terminated... when he killed her. Wasn't it?

That's why in this film we see the flashback of Weyland making deal with Lucas/Frank. It's not a flashback to the previous film, but just a flashback to before he lost control of the company to Niles.

Clearly he did not make a deal with Jones that would include him running over and killing her. Why would she make that deal?

If you recall, the deal she made with him was race or I spend Katrina to be raped, etc.

There is no deal discussed in DR3 that refers to the Sept. Jones deal. Weyland refers to the new deal he made with Lucas to continue to race as Frankenstein and he would fix his face and free him and his team.

And re: ending of DR2 and Lists and Katrina "knowing". Clearly they have their suspicions at the end of part 2, but... for the next 3 races which happen over the period of months (although never specified you get the sense that the races takes weeks if not months to prepare), Frankenstein completely ignored them. It's perfectly possible that both Katrina and Lists's suspicions fade because of how Frankenstein ignores them. You could even chalk up those initial suspicions to shock.

I don't think that's being willfully blind. I think that's perfectly logical. Ever lose someone close to you? Sometimes you think you see them but it's not them.

But yes, if you watch part 2 and then 3 not factoring in the 3+ races that happened in between, it could feel odd, but you're simply connecting the end of 2 to the beginning of 3 as if the death of Lucas was yesterday. It was in the timeline of the film months earlier.

reply

1) So you're 1st paragraph is not a mistake - as you clearly suggest, they can explain in a future film if they chose to do so, that Machine Gun Joe was racing and winning while they fixed Frankenstein. So, by your OWN explanation, it's not a mistake in this film, is it?

2) It's trolling to suggest the looking in cars cam is a "mistake". That was clearly a Voice-Over put in during post-production. So the filmmakers did not see that as a mistake. As already stated, they go out of their way to hide Frankenstein, it's fair to say that they could access other cars but his.

3) While part 2 ends with the fact Katrina and Lists know... maybe after 4 races and constant ignoring from Frankenstein, they gave up their dream. It's obvious they DON'T know it's him when his mask falls off in Africa. They could've easily shaken off their initial thoughts.

4) And Frankenstein was warned if he told anyone who he was, the team would be killed. He hid this to protect them. He believed this to be true, so he didn't tell them. That is clearly stated in the film.

reply

Yeah, I watched DR2 right before DR3 and it was an annoying continuity break, particularly Lists' reaction since he was the first one to say in DR2 that he wouldn't be so sure that Lucas was dead.

Re the in-car cameras announcement, couldn't it have been referring to dashboard cameras? I can't remember now but I thought it said you could see what your favorite racer was seeing, which wouldn't be his own face.

reply

Whil3 DR3 comes after DR2 in the timeline... DR3 does not happen RIGHT after DR2... there were 3 more races that happened. There was also an entire hostile takeover of Weyland, etc. While it is never established, in the 2008 version, you got the sense that the races were weeks if not months apart.

So even if they thought Luke could be alive at the end of 2, time has passed before part 3. He has obviously ignored them and not acted like the Luke they knew.

I think not taking into account that 3 races and a lot of time has happened in between 2 and 3 is not being fair.

reply

AGree with most of the errors, however as a poster above said, as far as the car cam concept (revealing Frank's true identity), I actually assumed that the idea was that audiences could pay to stream a feed directly from a chosen driver's dash cam... i.e. They can watch the race from the viewpoint (bonnet) of that car rather than the edited live footage of the helicopters and other external cameras, NOT that the racer cams were showing the drivers themselves. If not, though, than yes it makes no sense due to Frank being unmasked (which is clearly a conceit to stop the lead actor having their face covered most of the film, but I wish they'd left him burned/scarred to be honest and mostly masked).
