Universal has reached a new low. . . .

It's such a shame. The studio that used to bring us films like Jaws, E.T., and the Back To The Future Trilogy is now serving up fodder like this straight-to-video mess. What's worse is that they're marketing this as a continuation of their "great Monster Movie legacy."

I've seen the film numerous times now (I work for the company that's authoring the DVD and Blu-rays), and I promise you that this thing is a sheer mess. Why Stephen Rea is involved is beyond me.

Universal, we need to talk. An intervention is in order.

reply

you work for it and trash it? your now bizzness man.
anyway, let us make our own opinion.
STAR WARS 2000s sequels were trash too and yet made its bizzness.

reply

Spelling. Let's start there.

"That's what I love about this place. You ask, and then you get."

reply

Well, clearly, you're a deep thinker and clever person.

reply

I have the dvd and it's not that bad. Certainly not a new low for Universal--that would be 'Battleship."

reply

haha yes, battleship truly sucked.
i really liked the way they made it look like Liam Neeson had a large and central role, and then the truth hits you... god that movie sucked. I really had my heart set on it beeing a good cgi actionmovie.

reply

Battleship wasn't bad at all, I've seen far worse. And 6.0 from 84k users means it's at least half decent.

reply

lol battle ship was not a bad movie, just that most people didn't recognize that the aliens came in peace and didn't want to hurt anybody unless it was necessary lol.
The movie was about humans being stupid and so stupid humans didn't get it

reply

Battleship was seriously laughable. It only got a 6 because it had incredible eye candy.....without that, the easy to please simple people would have also rated it 3 - 4.

reply

I thought Battleship was a pretty brilliant send-up of the "Summer Blockbuster" genre; the gung-ho xenophobic ultra-patriotism, the barely there romantic thread just to work a cute chick in, the completely unrealistic over-the-top combat scenes, the widely inappropriate closing theme whose lyrics are in complete opposition to everything the film portrayed (Fortunate Son by CCR, like how Born In the USA was so often misappropriated in the 80s by politicians) ... you folks did realize Battleship was a satire, right??

reply

It's a summer action movie. If you're expecting Citizen Kane, you're an idiot. Summer blockbuster movies are all about fighting and explosions. The story has ALWAYS taken a distant backseat. You're supposed to go into them with your brain turned off, and just enjoy the spectacle. Hell, that could actually apply to MOST action movies, period.

"For me to watch Battleship and devote my full attention, I'd have to ask the studio 200$ for my time ( 90 minutes ), and some sort of moral compensation."

Being a little bit of a douche with that statement aren't we?

reply

[deleted]

wow, its ppl like you who dont pay attention to movies that judge too quickly and miss the point of the movie completely.
The movie is a satire... and it does a good job of doing that

I recall sometime shortly after the film release people saying that the aliens were actually the good guys or something, basing it off a joke the director said months before the film was released. I don't know, I don't believe it.

"Fate rarely calls upon us at a moment of our choosing."

reply

Ok I'll explain as best as I can. Not sure if you said you saw the whole thing or not but here goes.
The Aliens if you payed attention had way more powerful an sophisticated technology than the humans. Yet they didn't attack anybody that wasn't attacking them. If you glowed green and remained calm the aliens left you alone. If you glow red they attack. So when you aim your guns they attack.
The while movie they didn't attack anybody that wasn't a threat so technically they came in peace. But big macho American kid rookie had a hot head and started the fight without listening. And now all these ppl decide to act all patriotic through out the movie while the aliens are like we come in peace. It's a very obvious yet subtle approach that they came in peace. But when you realize that it makes the movie funny to watch. Hope you got all that.

reply

I've seen the whole thing twice now, and there are moments where that theory just doesn't hold any muster. Doubly so if you read the novelization that is 90% close to the end product that reveals that the aliens are testing the people to see how powerful they are and how much firepower it would take to take over the power.

Plus, there is the scene in which the aliens murdered the two policemen driving up the mountain. They didn't have their guns out and were going up just to check out what was going on but the aliens killed them offscreen.

Really not sure how this thread went from a spin-off to the Wolfman to Battleship.

"Fate rarely calls upon us at a moment of our choosing."

reply

Yeah I did think about that too. But since we never saw the death it could have been that those policemen were being aggressive. For the most part I think the theory works. Because they let that one scientist just walk right by them. Even calmed him down so he would stop shaking.

legendoflink3, speaking of "stupid humans", ever heard of the term spoilers?

Don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to (P. Green)

reply

Precisely. You don't have to be that smart to stop reading my post if you want to actually watch the movie.

reply

Why am I not surprised, legendoflink3? Insight has never been a forte of the intellectually challenged...

(By the way, how about changing your [ever so original] username? Nintendo doesn't need to be associated with such..., um, people...)

Don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to (P. Green)

reply

Don't get your panties in a bunch. Big deal I didn't put spoiler alert. Like I said. If you read far enough and don't want to spoil the movie then stop reading. It's what I would do.
And as for Zelda title what's wrong giving the title a little twist. What are you 12, I can use whatever user name I choose.
Missing a spoiler tag doesn't make you a terrible person, it's not a big deal. Let it go and actually contribute to the convo istead of trying to lecture me. I'm not on here enough to be worrying about spoiler warnings. But thanks anyway next time I'll be more considerate.

This movie was on par with Syfy original pictures. Battleship deserved an oscar in comparison to this garbage.

Interesting. I actually found this rather decent. Great gore, not a bad looking werewolf, and the production values and acting were decent.

Ok let's see the script for your movie.... doubt you work in the film industry... Probably a blockbuster employee that got to see this movie a couple of weeks ahead in time.

A classic IMDb argument. If you cannot cook filet minion, then don't dare trash hamburgers. This one always puts a smile on my face.

reply

This goes back to Universal 2010 Wolfman remake. They were going to put out sequels, direct to DVD but I guess since that movie didn't do well at all, they went with making a movie totally unrelated to the other movie.

From Wikipedia, The Wolfman (2010),

"Reboot

Despite underperforming at the box office, Universal originally planned a series of direct-to-video sequels but later reworked the project into a sequel of the original film rather than the remake. Universal later announced that the reboot would be a separate series with no connection to the original 1941 film or the remake. The film's official title is Werewolf: The Beast Among Us."

I agree with you 100%,DRock84 ...A studio which gave us all the best classic sci-fi and horror for decades and that only a few years back released Del Toro's very good "The Wolfman" can't now churn out this pathetic crap.I saw the movie ,it really stinks...It's truly sad.
