Why did Mark...

...try to leave the other people to die?

Sure, he was a snake and a cheat but actual murder-by-proxy...? Seems a bit of an overreaction.

maybe because the other people were the type that posted *beep* SPOILERS.

People discussing plot points in a movie forum?! Whatever next?

If you don't want spoilers, don't clock on threads which clearly indicate in their titles that certain characters or events are going to be discussed. I'm not sure what's so hard about that.

Mark's behaviour didn't seem to fit in with the way he behaved during the rest of the film...I just put it down to bad writing.

Try to hold onto your sex urge.

Yea, bad writing! He seemed weird after Charlie had come back from the basement, didn't even sound convincing that the thing had took Shelley! I was wondering if he had done away with her at one point!

I thought the same! But then Shelley never brought it up, even though it's kind of a thing you would, so...I dunno. Bad writing then, I guess.

Did it also look like he ditched Charlie in the airshaft a little too soon? He made the effort of holding his hand out for Charlie to grab but once the alien started clawing its way through the shaft, he thought: 'eff it,' and ran.

Guess that was the start of his slide into being Grade A douche.

I actually started a thread, Charlie said something to Mark, which seem to make him leave. Charlie seemed like a consistent character, very loyal, But Mark was a no no.... very bad writing, all was good up until the vents!

Same! I wondered if he killed her too, it seemed so random and weird. Plus, why would the monster randomly kidnap her? It made no sense.

I actually didn't think the airvent scene was too bad. By the time he ran, Charlie was completely cornered and there's nothing Mark could have done (aside from stab the alien with a giant pencil....... Those weapons....) Maybe a bit longer would have been good, but I think that's when I started to really like high after the cheating. Plus, he seemed genuinely torn up at Charlie's presumed death as well.

Still, trying to murder them seemed like a huge stretch even if he was a cowardly self-centered douche. With both Charlie and Shelley he was mainly just focused on self-preservation (And seriously? Who in their right mind that was in THAT situation would think Shelley was alive? The alien killed literally everyone else on the spot!) Randomly trying to murder them all at the need would still come out of nowhere

Actually, you should've put the word SPOILERS in your subject ... despite your use of the ellipsis. Eight more letters wouldn't have been a hardship and it's the mannered thing to do.

... there's some unclear and bad writing.

But I think what they wanted to convey is that in their friendship, Mark is seen as a strong, stable and supporting presence to Charlie but in reality, he is a coward leeching off him.

The stakes were raised when it became obvious this creature was extremely powerful and as this became more evident, Mark became more and more interested in his survival above all else.

He leaves the others hoping it will buy him time, I think. The creature was just behind them. This is awful direction, BTW... the closeups don't make it very clear but I was surprised they actually had time to crash the door and then close it back.

All in all, this film is OK for killing time but suffers from a derivative story, a poor script and really bad direction.

It was more stupidity than cowardice. Mark only needed to open the door for a second to get them it. It also felt like a forced attempt to make him worse than the cheating girlfriend.

Of course Charlie was the good guy. The actor playing the part is one of the screenwriter. What did you expect, the guy writing for himself the part of a douchebag ?

yup!!

but still, I dint feel left out, It seemed clear, to me, that from the begining
when the were in the car and charlie was making those popping noises with his
mouth, charlie was looking away but mark was clearly staring at him and, to me,
clearly showing contempt for him. I felt right away that something was the matter.
then as soon as mark pulled her into that room and begin to try and kiss her,
I knew that the character was a total scumbag. best friend would never do that
to another guy, trust me, I have good friends and I have had what I thought were
best friends, but they were trying to put the moves on a girl I was dating(this
was a long time ago) and I knew right then that we were(me and the guy friend)
were just 2 guys that knew each other. we never were the same after that.
went from hanging out 2-3 times a week, to talking once in a blue moon...

Awful writing and character derailment, basically. They needed to turn him into a one-dimensional unlikeable douche so the audience would cheer when Mark died, previous character development be damned. I actually liked him before hand too. Flawed, but he did seem to feel some level of guilt and did seen to genuinely care about Charlie (like the airvent scene, where he tries to save him up until the monster has Charlie completely cornered and he can't do anything)

I figured that something was up with this guy since he seemed to get mad that his best friend only wanted to talk about how much the break up hurt him. He didn't want him talking bad about his -ex and best friend usually join in on trashing the ex of their best friends unless something's up. When he kissed the guy's ex, I wasn't surprised.

So I always saw Mark as a phony. The not wanting to help and saying people were dead when they weren't came across as him being scared, wimping out, and not wanting to put himself in danger. He panicked and thought his friend was being killed, but he did try to help him. He said the ex was dead, [probably because she resented the fact that her ex was still alive and assumed he didn't help him. So he didn't want the guilt or responsibility.

But I think the wole movie would've been more intense if they ditched the relationship stuff altogether. Sure they could establish that that's the reason they're going to the storage unit, but if they focused more on Mark and his best friend's relationship and back story rather just the other stuff, Marks actions and attitude would've read more clearer. But I think they could've even made a scarier movie if they all just happened to be random people at the storage at the time all this happened. Just have them already there for different reasons when the plane crashed.
