Worst Roast

That I've seen anyway. Jeff Ross and Seth McFarlane were the only two who consistently delivered.

Actually, Charlie Sheen had a good closing, and I'm fairly certain he wrote it himself, which is rare.

Patrice O'Neal wasn't bad, but disappointed, and he was normally a reliable talent on Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn.

Anthony Jeselnik, who was one of the few salvageable roasters from the Trump roast, was also sub-par.

reply

It wasn't that good because Charlie Sheen just doesn't give a f((( about the jokes. People can make fun of his crazy life all they want and he's used to it and loves it.

I expected much better from Anthony Jeselnik.

It just seemed like people on the roast say a bunch of racist jokes because they know they can get away with it without getting punched in the face. But it's kind of old. It's like that's all they have to say whenever there is a black person there. Go for something more clever. That's why I'm glad Patrice O'Neal went up there and got them back just being naturally funny like he is.

And when they aren't telling drug jokes or race jokes, it's make reference to someone who died recently. Kind of cheap.

Wow Carrie, so you were excited to watch the Roast but you don't like race jokes, drug jokes or death jokes? What were you expecting? A guy walks into a bar jokes? Your momma jokes? I mean come on, it's a Roast. They've had the same formula for years.

I thought the racist jokes were hilarious. They went heavier on the racist stuff this time and I'm glad. It's another subject that people need to get over and be able to joke about. Black comedians make fun of white people constantly but all the sudden its out of line for white comedians to make fun of black people? That joke about Patrice's grandmother raising him was one of the best of the night.

By the way, there is no way Charlie Sheen wrote his bit at the end. You really think he has the talent to write stuff like that? He's not a comedian. He can deliver the jokes like he wrote them himself because he's an actor.

reply

You're mistaken if you're assuming that I was hurt or offended. I love edgy humor! Gilbert Gottfried says the most offensive things and I've laughed my ass off at his roasts. I was just bored by that route on this roast because it was done in a cheap, unoriginal way. The Amy Winehouse and Ryan Dunn jokes sucked and were not funny, so they just came across as insensitive.

Last year the jokes they made at Donald Trump's roast had some of all that stuff, but it was atleast funny. You have to be funny and clever if you're going that route to pull it off or else it just looks like a cheap attack and a tired attempt at pretending anything shocking equals funny. I love edgy humor, but bring me something more original and clever, that's all I'm saying.

I'm with Carrie, I've been trying to put my finger on the exact point of what I didn't like about the roast. It's gotten old and like Patrice O'Neal said, it's like an excuse to just say mean s#!t

I like over the top humor, I'm a big fan of Family Guy and thought Seth's Amy Winehouse joke was just too easy, the joke on Ryan Dunn failed because you're directing it right to Steve-O with the sole intention of going for the jugular rather than putting a spin on it.

Lampenelli is not there so they turn to the other chubby white girl to make slut jokes, there's the unknown comic jokes, the Shatner and his grey anaotmy being used twice, and then the rest of if it is trying their best to insult in a shocking rather than clever way. It's tired and repetitive.

What's funny is before I though Jeff Ross was just kind of there in the other panels, but last night he definitely stood out as a pro. he said offensive s#!t too but the way he did it was above the schoolyard level that most of the rest of them seemed to be operating at (like O'neal said, the other dude would be an open miker in his world) and then signing off with something on the lighter side to show it's all just a laugh made me respect him more as a comedian.

Bring up recently dead people isn't anything new for Roasts..and I thought the Ryan Dunn joke was great.

Agreed that it's unfortunately a double standard.

Maybe you should tstick to shows like, 'That's so Raven' and maybe some 'Andy Griffith'. It is a roast! The jokes are crude, rude and lude. The racist stuff you seem so worried about? Go watch a classic Dean Martin one. Same stuff, no dirty words. Death jokes and drug jokes? They are there too! Sure theay are dirtier than they used to be, but you forget. This is for grown-ups, not whiner-babies who think they can save the world by lecturing the adults about the do's-and-dont's of society.

reply

Agreed. I thought Schumer did a great job. Thought Walsh, Jeselnik, and O'Neal all did okay.
Everyone else on the stage was unwatchable.

reply

For the "hype", I left disappointed ...
All the "heavy hitters" weren't even there (minus Jeff Ross) ...

It was "kinda" fun; but I would have LOVED to see what LL would have added!

Who do you guys think would of have been a good panel of comedians. My own would have to be Eddie Griffin, Greg Giraldo if he we`re still here, Lisa Lampanelli, Jimmy Kimmel, and the one and only Artie Lange.

reply

[deleted]

Well besides Artie anybody you would have picked.

reply

I think the reason it was bad is because they had to scrape the bottom of the barrel to get people to appear on the show. The only heavy hitters on the dais were Jeffrey Ross and Seth MacFarlane. I'm wondering if other big names were approached and they simply said no because it's Charlie Sheen.

reply

I know! Where was Lisa Lampenelli?? These roasts are making me REALLY miss Greg Giraldo more and more..

The Joan Rivers roast was by far the worst. Second would be the David Hasselhoff roast. This one (to me) was just okay. I expected better.

I thought the Trump roast was not very good. I think this roast was decent. The dais was not A-list, but I thought they delivered.

reply

this wasn't the worst roast, that would have to go the bob saget one. but it's down the list for sure. the expectations for this one were so high, that it couldn't live up to the hype. plus, didn't help that only one of the "heavy hitters" was there... ie jeff ross.

of course greg giraldo is the king of the roasts, b/c he had the sharpest zingers outta everybody. still sad that he passed away. and lampanelli couldn't be there b/c of scheduling conflicts. ross-giraldo-lampanelli were the best 1-2-3 punch in roast history (modern era) imo.

but i guess since greg's gone, the new 3rd woulda been whitney cummings. her crass humour made me a lol a buncha times.

anyway, by far the best roast imo was the hasselhoff one. then shatner and flavor flav. that's my top 3.

agreed. i think roast of bob saget or donald trump much much better than this.

I missed a few people, but those I caught did not make for a great overall roast. Patrice O'Neal was the saving grace, and Charlie Sheen did OK for the most part, but Seth MacFarlane was annoying, Mike Tyson and Steve-O acted like they were on drugs, Amy Schumer and Anthony Jeselnik (who the hell are these people?) were more miss than hit, Shatner was painful, and Lovitz was NOT on his A-game.

Next time, they should bring back Lisa Lampanelli, Gilbert Gottfried, and Betty White. To a lesser extent, I'd even suggest Andy Dick, Sarah Silverman, and Nick DiPaulo.

I know it's a dirty game, but it's the only one The Man left us to play.

reply

Charlie Sheen has taken a lot of abuse this year so in a way this show was pointless.

This wasn't even a roast for Charlie Sheen anyway, it was for Iron Mike Tyson as he took the most hits. I agree with what Patrice said, Mike's starting to look like an uncle tom. Dance for the white people Mike.
