They got Sean Penn...just to grunt?

Okay, why hire a famous movie star if your only going to ask them to grunt? What's the point of that?

Hell, this makes Vin Diesel's work as Groot look more sensible by comparison! At least there, while he only said three words over and over again, he managed to give it different emotions and imbued the character with a personality.

How can you possibly give a character a personality through voice work with just grunting? You can't!

reply

Terrence, the character Sean Penn is playing as, is a character in the game that never changes his expression or speaks because he is traumatized by his past.

Now, I am not sure why they got a famous actor to do this, but I think there is probably a reason why.

I think they may pull off some character personality because there are many characters in films that do not speak.

Hope this helps and have a good day.

reply

Thanks for telling me more about the character but I still don't understand why they had to hire Sean Penn to do this

Besides, wouldn't it be cheaper to hire an unknown than hire a famous actor to do this role? They've already got enough celebrities anyway, do they need one more?

reply

I see what you mean though, I would have done the same.

reply

Maybe he wouldnt charge much because its only grunting, and they would get extra star power, sean penn is a more serious actor compared to the rest of the cast.

Also they hired Vin Diesel to say 3 words in GoTG and I think he did an amazing job, saying a lot of things with a single grunt must be tough xd

I can only think of these possibilites.

1. The movie just wants a big name on the cast to draw audiences.
2. Sean Penn did it pro bono because he or one of his loved ones likes the game so much.

As mentioned, it also goes for Vin Diesel in Guardians Of The Galaxy just to say "I am Groot." throughout the film. There's Kristin Chenoweth as well, who only kept barking in the Charlie Brown movie.

These answers are good too.

Have a great day!

I, too, questioned Penn as Terrence. But also have to say, Terrence made me laugh with every grunt! I give Penn credit for taking something as simple as a grunt and making it work.

reply

they did the exact same thing in south park with George Clooney.
they Hired Clooney to play a gay dog and all he did was bark, that was the joke, that it was ironic. the irony WAS the joke.

so maybe angry birds had a similar thinking.

reply

I guess but, and correct me if I'm wrong, they didn't put Clooney's name in the advertising for that episode.

That's what kind of bugs me too. If Sean Penn went uncredited, then his appearance might have made a fun little easter egg. But they put his name on the poster-that's what really bugs me! It seems like they really just cast him for really no reason other than name value, which doesn't even make sense because the majority of children, the target demographic, have probably never heard of him or, if they have, they don't care who he is.

reply

Sean Penn's easiest paycheck EVER! The joke is definitely on the idiot studio that PAID him simply to grunt! I'd guess his voicework took him less then a day to record.

Stupid Hollywood!

Im gonna punch you in the cooter, I swear to God!

reply

i mean, Sean' casting IS kinda weird, but i was just saying, it is not unheard of.

it does seem weird to advertise him so much but, i at least see the humor in it even if it was unintentional

reply

The target demographic isn't really kids--it's the PARENTS of kids. Parents are the ones that the studios have to actually sell to, because they're the ones with the MONEY.

reply

Yes, but parents aren't gonna go see the movie because they actually want to see it. They'll see the movie If their kids beg them to. Therefore, the target demographic are the kids.

The legend of the dog faced woman.

reply

How dare you insult Vin Diesel by saying he only uttered 3 words!!! It was 4.

reply

FIVE.. I am insulted by your insult sir...

He went from I AM.. to WE ARE.. Groot..

and as for the why? Even though by today's standards its ancient history.. but Sean Penn was an ANGRY guy back in the 80s.. back before Depp was trashing hotel rooms and Bale was yelling at poor lighting guys.. Sean Penn was the orignial ANGRY bird, lol.

But by saying they just wanted more star power on the poster.. would kids know who MOST of the cast were? No offense.. but 90% of them were SNL or bigger in R-rated films. The only one i can think of they MIGHT know would be Josh Gad who played Olaf "in Frozen". So most of the names on the marquee wouldn't be selling the movie to kids, and even the NAME.. as at the age this is probably aimed at I had zero idea of who most people were.

so the names are squared more at the adults as it usually is. I don't think kids would care that its Stiller or Rock or even Ali G in the "Madagascar" series. for example.

reply

I dunno, they might've heard of the other actors in passing, even if they haven't seen any of their other movies (plus, some of them have done other kids movies)

reply

Thats the same as having George Clooney as the dog on South Park, its a nice joke and likely the easiest paycheck Penn has ever made. I kinda wish he had lines at least just to hear his weird voice.
