I think they only used him for his name. They could have very well just used any regular Joe. He probably just did it for fun or fast money, but I doubt he got paid as much as Jason Sudeikis.

What I don't get though is, if you're going to use a name actor, why not just use someone the target audience is more familiar with? What child has heard of or is a fan of Sean Penn?
what kid has heard of Bill Hader, Maya Rudolph or Peter Dinklege? Hopefully a KID doesn't really know any of them.. as they, and almost the entire cast does not typically do more family friendly/kid films. the only exception, and even then he does work alot in the R-rated adult genre but Josh Gad can say he did "Frozen". And most kids would recognize the voice.
^Actually, Bill Hader and Maya Rudolph have done voice acting for a lot of animated films as well as doing more R-rated stuff, so they might've heard of them. Plus, it's always possible they heard about their R-rated films without actually watching them.
Plus, kids might've heard of Peter Dinklage through Ice Age and X-Men. And, even if they've never seen Game of Thrones (hopefully), the show is so popular there's no way nobody's never heard of it. A lot of them probably at least know he's on the show.
