He was a deserter and seemed to be a butcher (thought not as bad as Uncle Vance).

Yes, I thought it was odd that he would be allowed come home early from the war.

Costner was one of the show's producers so of course, he was gonna make himself look like the lesser villain of the feud.

Kevin Costner DID NOT write the script doof. He didn't make himself look anything. You didn't pay very much attention or you would have seen the evil in the character of Devil Anse.
