Had looked forward to this show, but was dissapointed not only in the sometimes unintellible speech, but the choppy continuity. Gave up after the first hour, too much happening too fast by too many people. Pity. I thought most of the actors where very good, but the editing and continuity very poor.
No you're not, it was mentioned on the thread below and on another thread. I have to use subtitles as well, not good. Apart from being an inconvenience you tend to miss nuances in the acting - facial expressions etc. But it's par to the course in movie and tv productions these days. But who cares? An audience doesn't find out until after it's paid its money.
For me, it's not that I can't tell what they are saying, it's that the sound seems to be poor.
Great first part though, and I'm looking forward to the remainder!

Being a Brit I found the accents very hard to follow at first, and at certain times during the whole series, but I got used to after a while.

Duty Now For The Future
Don't feel bad. I am from that exact area (Matewan, West Virginia) and found it hard to understand at times. I don't know if it was the sound quality or actors trying to fake a West Virginia accent, but it was difficult.
I visited Devil Anse's gravesite once when I was a kid. I will have to go back again sometime. I don't remember it well.
I'm happy I'm not the only one who needs subtitles. I grew up in the US, which means my native language is American English, and I feel silly reading subtitles for a very American story like this (I have a degree in American Studies too). There's a lot of mumbling in regional accents and I simply cannot understand half of the dialogue.
