Correct. Alot of the feelings of the McCoys were based out of supposed oppression and being taken advantage of by the Hatfields that was probably more jealousy of the wealth of the Hatfields. The Hatfields were also more polictically connected.
Aside from the killing of Harmon, the early part of the feud seemed to be more the fault of the McCoy's while the latter part (after the death of Ellison) was more the fault of the Hatfield's. After the New Year's massacre, the head McCoy in the feud was the lawyer Percy Cline as Randolph McCoy essentially distanced himself by moving to Pikeville.
In any case, both were at fault.
