Anse's brother, Ellison Hatfield

Ellison was actually my favorite character in the movie because he was the only rational one out of all of them. He was always trying to keep the peace unlike the rest of them who just wanted to add fuel to the fire. It was also pretty heart warming how protective he was of his son, Cotton Top. I think the actor, Damian O'Hare did a great job and I wish he could have been in the movie more than he was.

Yes, he was the only really nice character and I bet they did it on purpose to shock us more...

I hated that scene where he was stabbed over and over and then shot. I really disliked the McCoys after that and thought the three boys deserved their fate (well, Tolbert espeicially!). I wish the rest of the Hatfields and McCoys could've followed Ellison and try not to be part of the feud.

Very good post. Truth be told, I was hoping there would be a post about his character. Ellison was my favorite character as well although I liked others from Powers Boothe's character, Roseanne, and then Cotton Top. But I liked Ellison trying to make peace and still be a stand up guy.

I felt Randall's concern for him was genuine in that he realized he was a good man. I know the movie had to play out, but would have liked it had Devil Anse given Randall his sons "I trust you to do what is right in the name of my brother than you pray for... the choice is yours, Randall McCoy." Then see if Randall could have brought his own sons to justice. It would have ended the bad blood and quelled the fight as both Patriarchs would have assumed firm control over their clans.

That said, it played out the way it had to essentially follow. It was a tragic loss and I could see why it would make one seek justice/revenge.

Completely agree!

I really liked Ellison too. (***Spoilers below***)

I wonder if he really was the voice of reason.

He kept a low profile but could more than handle his own. The McCoy boy's pride was hurt from a 5 to 1 beating so they pull out a knife and stab him. Drunken cowards.

I agree completely. Allison was the only really likeable and rational character of the whole series. I was very sad when they killed him and truly disgusted with the McCoy kids. They deserved to be executioned.

Boycott movies that involve real animal violence! (and their directors too)
