7/10: Good aesthetics and topic - but the drama missed depth.

If we are talking the drama side only, there are series out there which have absolutely stunning directing and script. Few examples being The Wire, Crash, Boardwalk Empire and Breaking Bad. Hatfields & McCoys did not reach this level, although I am not sure if it even tried. It is a simple serie, with very little directing in it. Actors act on the screen, but there aren't any interesting cuts, visual cues or such.

Now while the Hatfields & McCoys was enjoyable, it was also rather shallow on the dialogue side. Although there was tension when the two families were arguing with each other, there wasn't real dialogue with depth in it. I think I counted only one such moment during the whole 4-4.5 hours, and even that was sorta ruined on the next scene.

That was the part where Johnse was talking to his father, Anse, by the fishing pool. When they came back, the outcome was delayed for way too long time. It was too cheesy/cliffhangerish.

That was the major turn off for me in this beautifully looking miniserie. And well...I think the shooting, which there was plenty of, could have been bit more realistic. The bullets did not penetrate rather thin trees. At least there wasn't a scene in a saloon, with table knocked over to "block" the fire. :)

Fine watch, but nothing that special in my opinion.

I think the mini series did a rather effective job with dealing with the battle of the Hatfield and the McCoys showing how gruesome the battle was.

That it did, but there certainly was room for more character depth/drama.

I absolutely agree and gave it 7 points as well.

I agree. Definitely worth a watch (or two), but they killed off the few likeable characters in horrible ways.
Great cast, good music, poor dialogue. Lots of drama, lack of depth.
A solid 7/10.

Boycott movies that involve real animal violence! (and their directors too)
