And he did seem very distraught over her when she collapsed from her always fatal 'pale complexion' illness that has claimed so many actresses. That said, he was still a villain and his 'love' was of the obsessive controling sort.

Before you start throwing the dreaded 'P' word around, please remember the time period that this story was taking place. On average women married younger then, because (as we see in the mini-series) she's expected to bear 8-10 children and her average life expectancy was her early 40s.
