Don't waste your time on this hillbilly bushwacking garbage

I found it ironic that the top user review for this series isn't even spelled correctly. I'd selected to view this based upon favorable word of mouth and the fact that I like most of the big names that were in this in other works. Filmed in bleak color didn't add anything. The first part I thought well that's the opener, it's going to get better. Episode two confirmed that wasn't going to happen and I decided to watch the third part simply out of morbid curiosity. Apparently the director feels that all tough men spit which happens just about every few minutes and I find that disgusting. The accents made the viewing without subtitles impossible and I found myself remembering better titles with similar themes throughout the viewing such as Cold Mountain, by far a much better picture. Banjos, hillbillies and bushwackers this is 290 minutes of my life I wish I could have back. Even the attorney Cline seemed to be channeling Val Kilmer's Doc Hollywood and Bill Paxton's character seemed impotent throughout. Talk about a period in history that didn't need retelling. Johnse is a typically douchebag kid and Tom Berenger looked like he hadn't washed in a month just to prepare for this role. Apparently too, moonshine can cure a bullet to the gut and everyone seemed content consuming copious amounts. I'm one who actually likes certain Costner movies, but this isn't one of them. Were I to teach a class on film and television making I might show this as an example of what not to do.

I wasn't expecting a real critique after I read the subject, but geez. Every reason you give for not liking it are all personal preferences. Other people, such as myself, may consider some of the same ones listed as reasons that it is well made, such as the spitting and Berenger's appearance as both of these provided a sense of reality. Therefore, since you're nitpicking doesn't really pertain to the actual quality of the series or anything technical, it hardly seems fair to demand people not waste their time by watching it. I don't like movies that revolve around people dancing or, even worse, competing while doing so, but I'm certainly not going to tell people they shouldn't watch it just because of that.

This is a story about people who really existed, in a time and place in American history not made up fiction.
It was yolks and shown like it would of been.
I am like everyone else who read your critique, that's your opinion.... But an in accurate appraisel at best.

No need to feed the troll (OP).

Why so harsh? This miniseries should have been longer so we could have seen more of the feud happening. I liked it very much. It was very well done. Your gripes belong to you, not anybody else.

reply

why were you watching it in the first place? it is about "hillbillies" in the old west and the people were dirty back then and probably lot more dirty then the actors are here, and everything you have against this is probably the reason some other people will like it.

reply

It's not the "old west," but rather an area along the West Virginia/Kentucky border.

I am from this area of West Virginia/Kentucky and although the movie was really good and based on fact. A lot of it was not accurate. Still very interesting though. We have a nice tour here in Williamson, WV and also one in Pikeville, Ky that will take to the sites. One is the well(which is still standing) where the McCoy girl was killed during the New Years Day massacre. Another is where the McCoy boys were shot while tied to the pawpaw trees (which are still there). We would love to have you all to come visit us and take a look around. You can't throw a rock and not hit a Hatfield or McCoy still. http://www.tugvalleychamber.com/
