'History Channel' more like the 'Red-neck Channel'

I am a fan of history and really enjoyed the History Channel, back when there was actually history on the Channel. Ove the last few years I've watched their programming move away from serious history to silly sudo-history reality TV shows like Ice Road Truckers, Ax Men, American Pickers, Pawn Stars and the Swamp People.

Besides having very little do with history (Pawn Stars and American Pickers are really pushing it) what does all these show have in common? They are all programs geared to entertain red-necks. And now they finally decide to do a mini-series (which I've been surprised they haven't done before) and what is the subject matter they pick to do it on? The Hatfields and McCoys. Well, at least it's history, but I'm trying to think what story they will do their next mini-series on. Bootlegging and the creation of Nascar?

Don't confuse my lack of funds for company loyalty.

Just a little History lesson on where the term redneck came from: The term redneck originated way back in the 30's during a number of battles fought in West Virginia. A large group of unionized members march their way to Logan to alarm the mine owners and make them unionized. They wore red bandannas around their neck thus the term redneck. Also, this term originally started in the year 1800's to refer to sharecroppers who are hardworkers in plantations and fields thus having sunburns around their neck" Now maybe you're OK with using the term as an insult but maybe, just maybe, you'll reconsider and acknowledge the real reason we have this term. Of course I doubt you'd be swayed one bit based on the arrogance of your comments but I thought I'd give it a try.

Same argument can be made for MTV which really does nothing musically oriented once they set the precedent with game shows and reality shows. It changed the audience and how TV is programmed. History channel had a limited audience to mostly people who were interested in seeing Frank Capra's "Why We Fight" every day of the week.

It does seem to have veered away from "History" and by and large it has. The history aspect are components, but certainly not the focus. I think other channels seem to do better jobs like Destination America (formerly Discovery) with their States show and history of various places, etc.

Hatfields & Mccoys was a very good miniseries, I watched it on DVD. That said, history is past present and future, whether it was good or bad or even remembered, do I care about the history of the aztecs? or the indians? nope because their history never related to mine, but does it mean it is not history? Ignorant people...

"...That said, history is past present and future, whether it was good or bad or even remembered,...."

hammer.. welcome to the IMDb Discussion Boards, though I must admit that I do not know what point you are trying to make with your first post ?

Be advised, that by definition "History" is "the study of the PAST"... only the "History-hating" CEO of the channel she still has the nerve to call HISTORY, wants us to believe that "History" includes the present and the future....

....to justify her putting any cheaply produced piece of garbage on a channel she still has the gall to call HISTORY, and pawn it off on ignorant people and "History-haters" as "History made every day"... and convince them that some yahoo driving a truck across a frozen wasteland, cutting down a tree, killing an alligator, or doing some other boring mundane job jazzed up with cheap Drama, is a "History" Documentary.

HATFIELDS & McCOYS is the annual "History" bone that the channel tosses out to the people who tune to a channel called HISTORY... and expect to see "History" programming.

Before you use redneck as a derogatory term, please look up the origins of the name. I suggest you begin with googling Blair Mountain.

Lol, I too used to enjoy the History Channel. And though I can see the history in these reality shows, they just don't interest me. My father complains about the change of the channel almost daily. We're not Americans so all these reality shows just don't interest us. They should have more international programming that appeals to everyone, not just a certain segment of American society.
