Did Mr Nobley really say "I love you" to Jane in the Theatrical?

In the theatrical play , the "death scene" of Mr Nobley and Jane , did he really say "I love you" by accident or was that just his line ? By the surprised look on both their faces it seems like he might have said that by accident, but since they were "acting" in the play I couldn't tell
