Any guys like this movie?

My wife made me watch this on Valentines Day and I fell asleep.
The next night we tried again and I couldn't keep my eyes open. She has seen it six times and loves it.

Guys stay far away from it. It's not the worst movie ever, but there are better movies guys and girls can watch together.

I have a friend who always watch this kind of movies (rom-coms or period films) with her hubby. And they watched Austenland, and he didn't hated it (or fell asleep), but didn't find it very funny. It's important to say that he was asked in front of his wife -who, of course, loved the movie-, so, probably he wasn't 100% honest. He laughed a bit of the ridiculousness (like the tanned servants with big bulges), and Jennifer Coolidge.
Personally, I prefer to watch this movies alone or with (girl)friends. My SO usually make jokes or criticize everything when he gets bored or doesn't like something. Besides, I can't enjoy the movie (or ballet, or whatever I love and he hates) if I know he's miserable lol.

For the internet is dark and full of terrors

Just watched it with the wife & her two girls and I thought it was great.

I'm generally more of an SF/fantasy guy and not a Jane Austen fan.

No tears please, it's a waste of good suffering.

How can you say not to watch it when you were tired in the first place?

I was in a theater with many couples and I noticed the men laughing loudest and longest!
Try it you may be surprised.
It’s good to dream

My husband just watched it with me and he liked it, too, LeMarchand. We both laughed all through it!

I don't know why a woman would make a guy watch this movie. This is chick flick territory. ...but you are right-- it is not as bad as making your husband/boyfriend watch Twilight or most of the sappy chick movies out there. I liked this movie a lot-- but I can only think of one guy in my cirlcle of friends that would like it.

I had to watch it with my wife,I like some chick flicks but found this boring and unfunny, couldn't stand that 'kiwi' actor either. Why use an actor from New Zealand anyway, are they cheap? No beards in 1820s England either!

I liked it and I'm all man. Hairy chest and everything. :)

Not the most emasculating movie I've ever seen, but, yeah, there are better movies out there.

I'm a guy and I liked it. I like a lot of quirky stuff, though, and this appealed to my sensibilities. It's a lot of fun! It doesn't take itself too seriously and the actresses are all phenomenal. I had a lot of fun watching it and I generally hate chick flicks.

I'm a guy and I liked it. I actually laughed out loud a couple of times. I'm mostly a big SciFi fan, though I have liked both the 1995 and 2005 versions of Pride & Prejudice, but I think I'm looking at it differently than a lot of people. What I mostly like about P&P is that at the end, the woman is forced to acknowledge just how judgmental SHE has been, and I don't see this particular message in much literature.

What I liked about this movie is that I recognized all the different Austen tropes, from Jane getting caught in the rain and rescued by Nobley, to Amelia's BS story about her secret engagement. I actually knew the whole time Jane was being set up with Martin, but I thought it was brilliant. In fact, I almost wish there really was a place like this where obsessed women could go to get past their issues.

Really, every woman I've ever met who mentions Pride and Prejudice is always dreaming of a Mr. Darcy, but they themselves are no Jane or Elizabeth Bennett. A lot more women are Charlotte Lucas, who if you think about it actually got a happy ending of her own, but most Austen fans don't seem to realize it. If you think about it, Mrs. Wattlesbrook was actually providing a great service. Jane went there looking for a Mr. Darcy, and she almost had him, but realized she'd be happier with one of the servants. Sure it all turned out to be part of the fantasy, but it made her realize she'd prefer something real than to keep living in a fantasy.

And it was hilarious too. Every time I heard the name "Miss Erstwhile," I chuckled a bit.

I'm so ugly...that's ok 'cause so are you.

I'm a guy --52 --short bald hairy back --married with kids. I came across this on cable this afternoon by complete accident and watched it to the end. Something different --bit of a challenge to understand --didn't know exactly where it was going but that is so rare to see these days that it made it interesting. So I liked it ----

That sounds very fun. What a great movie to come across by accident.

My husband watched it with me and laughed aloud a lot, mostly at Jennifer Coolidge's hilarious lines, but I seriously doubt he'd ever want to see it again.

reply

I liked it, but I have an English Masters; plus serious history buff.
