Did anyone at anyone at any point wonder if perhaps Pauline's 'condition' and 'delusions' might have actually been connected to her near-drowning incident as a child (when she recollects her father's giving her a cold sore).

I'm not sure if she's meant to be somewhat "brain damaged" or a product of her parents dysfunctionality. Very odd film.

I'd buy that she suffered brain damage during that experience. Psychological damage the rest of her way through to the end.

She said herself she was unbalanced, this is like a perfect storm of circumstances that could lead someone over the edge like that.
