For those of you confused about the ending...

If you weren't 100% sure that the sister was dead, I feel like I should clarify a few things so that you don't go looking for a discount surgeon online.

Transplants cannot be performed
- In a garage
- By one person
- By abducting a random person and hoping their blood type matches that of the person receiving the transplant
- With kitchen knives, no matter how nice the set is
- Without any kind of medical equipment keeping the 'patients' alive/breathing
- By a teenager whose medical training consists of "well I pulled a lung out of a dead bird one time so I think I've got this down"

Please avoid any craigslist surgery ads if you feel any of these factors might be involved!! But seriously, the sister is very, very dead.

reply

So tell me about this breathing equipment used during lung transplants. How does it work?

And if anyone wants to read about the whole procedure: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lung_transplantation

If anyone still thinks the sister could have survived after reading those, I suggest sterilization.

I THINK IT IS PAINFULLY CLEAR THAT YOU ARE THE ONE THAT NEEDS STERILIZATION.

reply

I doubt a window would be clear to you - although I'll allow that thinking is probably painful...

reply

For anyone wanting sterilization, I do have a garage and a nice set of kitchen knives.

reply

...are you even being serious with that? You don't have to be a doctor to be familiar with heart-lung machines.

edit: oh, were you poking fun at me bc I referred to a "breathing" machine for someone with no lungs in their body? lol, it was obvious what I meant.

Maybe a few people thought it was going the way of this film's sibling-in-spirit MAY, where (Spoilers for MAY) the "human doll" appears to be alive to May at the end, even though it's far more likely that this is just May's dying vision.

But they didn't show anything like that. If they had shown the sister seeming to come alive in Pauline's mind, I could understand how people might be a bit confused. But as the OP said, it's pretty clear that Grace, the nicest and most innocent character in the whole cast, is dead.

It actually was a pretty shocking ending. I was certain Traci Lords would be the one to die.

The war is not meant to be won... it is meant to be continuous.

reply

Agree with you DHB - whats so complicated??? An 18 year old complete whack job has killed two people because she has convinced herself she is a surgeon and can actually perform a lung transplant. Pretty simple. I think the only question for debate is Pauline's reaction when her mother grabs her. In any event, terrific film. Watched it again last night - INTENSE!!

reply

Exactly ;) it was merely in jest.

Being an avid reader of SMBC, I'm very much aware of heart-lung machines and how you could use them to freak someone out :)

reply

Meow hiss...come on guys it's a movie, and a pretty great one at that. Let's just enjoy and avoid scratch work.

reply

Coolio! I just watched it.

I think the blood coming out of her sister's mouth during the procedure was probably a bad sign. Having airways full of blood is going to be an issue when you transplant new lungs. Also she didn't seem to be sufficiently concerned with getting her sister breathing again once she'd finished the operation.

reply

LOL. Thanks for clarifying. My pet bird thanks you as well.... *puts away knife set*

Honestly. A missing organ, pale skin, blood spurting out of the mouth and a mother's wails of sorrow didn't trip the alarm for some people that this kid died....

reply

so....can you get an std from a dead girl? and if the dead girl is 14 am i still a peodophile?

reply

Guess that depends on how old you are. If you're like 10 maybe she's the pedophile.

reply

What grinds my gears: people who misuse the word pedophile. Get some education. A pedophile is someone sexually attracted to PREPUBRSCENT kids. A 14 year old is NOT prepubescent. Pedophiles are attracted to kids below the age of 10-11.

reply

This is now my new favorite thread.

reply

ephebophile is the correct word, obviously

Is this it?

reply

The movie is based on a true story so it must be possible.

reply

True story? Source pls?

reply

to be frank.this is not even debatable that sister is dead.lolz......i think surgeons should not watch that ending.one of the worst scenes ever

reply

Worst as in... artistically / as a denouement for a film, or worst for a surgeon? If it's the latter, I'd agree. Also, terrible for people with OCD. So much mess...

Thanks for this information, just in time as well, as I was just about to start work on my brother and the post man, could have come a real cropper there!!

OK, so if the end result was that the two girls died and Pauline didn't succeed in the surgery, then that means she has no redeeming qualities to her whatsoever, she is just a blood-thirsty sociopath who needs to be shot and buried in the same ocean as OBL for the betterment of society.

The acting and atmosphere were great for this movie, I'll give it that, but the story overall didn't click with me, and I just don't feel for that monkey they call Pauline.

..that's kind of the entire point of this movie.

she is a severely depressed, bipolar mess of a sociopath with grandiose and delusional ideas and thoughts. She needed severe help. I think she truly did want to help her sister and thought she had the ability to do so, and it makes it a sadder ending for that, in my opinion.

Pauline is a young girl with severe mental problems that never got any help for it because of her parents either never recognizing how truly messed up she is, or not wanting to admit to themselves that she was that ill so they just ignored it. Likely the latter. It doesn't actually take a rocket scientist to recognize your daughter is acting beyond moody-bitchy teen-girl antics and might need help, not a pastor with no psychiatric training.

In the end, I think as her mother held her and screamed in both anger and sorrow over how truly messed up Pauline is, perhaps finally admitting to herself that her daughter was that ill, that Pauline had a moment of clear-headedness and realized the implications of what she had done and that she hadn't helped at all, but destroyed two lives, two families (the other family being Jump Rope Girl's) and her own life and future.

reply

Perfectly stated, Wrenny. Right on the money.

reply

What do you expect when John Waters is your shrink.

reply

She isn't a sociopath at all--she thinks she's saving Grace and her parents will finally be proud of her and her mother will love her. OK, the girl next door has to die, but it's a sacrifice for her sister.

reply

Haha yep, exactly.

reply

lol at OP, great post. Para: It is %*(^&ing unbelievably scary that people are even ASKING whether anyone might have survived that "surgery." These must be the same people who fall for the Nigerian "I have $500,000 in my bank but I just need your $5000 first to get back to the country and get it, so please send me money" scam. I think I might have to stop coming to these boards because they make me very pessimistic about humanity's chances of survival.

reply

Yes, I am terrified that people think she survived. Someone on the official FB page asked if she lived and the admin said no, she died. The OP then said, "But why, she did everything right!" ...I no longer want to live on this planet.

reply

You no longer want to live on this planet because of some guy's dumb comment...? How emo of you.

If you've heard of it, it's already too mainstream for me.
